We’ve known for some time now that starting from January 1st 2016 a new contract between Netflix and Disney comes into effect. We know the deal is in excess of a few billion dollars and it’s fantastic news. Over the past few months we’ve been learning more to what extent the deal would cover the contents of the Disney catalogue. Over the past couple of weeks we now know that all theatrical releases from Disney will appear on the Netflix catalogue roughly a few weeks after they stop showing in the theaters in the “pay 1” period.

Below is the theatrical release dates of all the titles scheduled to be released by Disney and their subsidiaries including Pixar, LucasFilm and Marvel Studios. The deal, scheduled to last for four years, will include every single one of the titles listed below coming to Netflix before anywhere else.

Sadly both of the big budget Disney movies scheduled to launch towards the end of this year including Star Wars VII : The Force Awakens and The Good Dinosaur don’t quite cover the criteria of the big deal meaning that Starz will still hold the rights to these titles going into 2016.

Note : We’ve listed the dates when the movie is set to be released in theaters. You should expect the movie to then appear on Netflix a few weeks after they come off of the box office. It’s not verified that every film will be covered in this list.

The Finest Hours (2016)

Theatrical Release – January 29th 2016

the-finest-hours

Disney’s year kicks off in 2016 with a live action movie based on a true story that happened in the early 1950’s. It’s based upon the Pendleton rescue mission where two oil tankers are destroyed by a storm and follows the rescue mission behind this event. A solid cast including Chris Pine, Casey Affleck and Holliday Grainger makes it a must watch.

Zootopia (2016)

Theatrical Release – March 4th 2016

zootopia

In early March in the US, Zootopia will release and while it’s not quite the Madagascar competitor you may think it might be, it is worth watching how this one turns out. Based on a tale of a rabbit who must contend with dealing with a wily fox. The cast currently includes Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman and Shakira.

Jungle Book – Live Action (2016)

Theatrical Release – April 15th 2016

jungle-book

The Jungle Book to me remains one of Disney’s all time greats. That’s why I’m a little apprehensive to see that they’re doing a live action version of the cartoon. The trailer for it looks great though with a much darker tone than the animation. Scarlett Johansson is the star of the show though so keep an eye on this one when it launches next April.

Captain America : Civil War (2016)

Theatrical Release – May 6th 2016

captain-america-civil-war

The third Captain America film will have Cap carry straight on after the events of The Avengers : Age of Ultron. This means we’ll see what remains of The Avengers since they went their separate ways at the end of the last movie. Captain America on his own has resulted in an excellent first movie and a rather average second movie. We’ll wait to see how this turns out.

Alice Through The Looking Glass (2016)

Theatrical Release – May 27th 2016

alice-through-the-looking-glass

Johnny Depp reprises his other Disney role in mid-2016 as he’ll be returning as The Mad Hatter for the second movie in the live action franchise. Alice in this story will be travelling back in time to rescue The Mad Hatter. A noticeable change for this movie is Tim Burton stepping down as director and opting to only be a producer. Will this be a factor for whether the film is a bust? Time will tell.

Finding Dory (2016)

Theatrical Release – June 17th 2016

finding-dory

Finding Dory is the spinoff of the 2004 movie Finding Movie which means it will have been over 12 years since Finding Nemo first came out. Ellen DeGeneraus will be voicing Dory, a forgetful fish that helped Nemo’s dad find his son in the original movie. Little is known about what her adventure will entail but Dory was a standout character from Nemo so we can’t wait to see what Pixar does with it.

The Big Friendly Giant (The BFG) (2016)

Theatrical Release – July 1st 2016

bfg

The Big Friendly Giant or otherwise known as the BFG will be the first time that Roald Dauls classic tale will be transitioning from book pages to the big screen. Bill Hader is on the cast list and Steven Spielberg is set to be spearheading the adaptation so there’s already a lot of reasons to be excited about this movie released in the summer.

Pete’s Dragon (2016)

Theatrical Release – August 12th 2016

petes-dragon

Set for a reboot just under 40 years after the original, Pete’s Dragon will be back in 2016. In the classic tale a young orphan finds a home with a pet dragon and a couple to get away from his abusive adoptive parents. It’ll undoubtedly have better visuals than the 1977 (or at least we hope) and we can’t wait to see how they develop it for a modern audience.

Doctor Strange (2016)

Theatrical Release – October 26th 2016

doctor-strange

Seeing his debut in the Marvel universe is Doctor Strange and with Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch) taking the lead role we literally cannot wait for next October. After his career as a Doctor was destroyed the surgeon trains to become a sorcerer and fights evil.

Moana (2016)

Theatrical Release – November 23rd 2016

moana

If the words “I wish there was a animation movie with Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson performing as an islander who sings all the time” have passed through your brain at any point then a) go get your head check and b) Disney will be your best friend towards the end of 2016.

Star Wars : Rogue One (2016)

Theatrical Release – December 16th 2016

star-wars-rogue-one

Rogue One, which sits nicely between episode VII and episode VIII will be one of Star Wars first spinoff movies in this list. Set as part of a new anthology film collection, Rogue One will have us following the mission to steal the plans for the death star. Expect it to be a very different tone from the other Star Wars but we can’t wait to see what Disney comes up with.

Beauty and the Beast (2017)

Theatrical Release – March 17th 2017

beauty-and-the-beast-2017

Emma Watson fans rejoice, a live action movie of the Disney tale Beauty and the Beat is scheduled for early 2017. It’s live action to an extent however as there will be lots of crossover throughout the movie. Dan Stevens is casted as the Beast with Luke Evans, Ewan McGregor and Ian McKellen also joining the cast list.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)

Theatrical Release – May 5th 2017

gaurdians-of-the-galaxy-vol-2

Guardians of the Galaxy was a bit of a risk for Marvel studios but thankfully, and mostly down to lead actor Chris Pratt, the first movie was a massive success green lighting the second title known as volume 2.

Star Wars VIII : No Title (2017)

Theatrical Release – May 26th 2017

star-wars

Not much can be said about this title until we learn what happens in episode VII. Sorry folks!

Cars 3 (2017)

Theatrical Release – June 16th 2017

cars-3

Pixars 2017 movie is a choice we’re not necessarily convinced of being the right one. Cars 1 was epic and to be honest Cars 2 for most was a bit of a disappointment. With most of the cast set to return it could be the redeeming movie for Cars that makes us want a Cars 5 perhaps?

Pirates of the Caribbean :  Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017)

Theatrical Release – July 7th 2017

pirates-of-the-caribbean

The fifth installment of Pirates of the Caribbean is set to be bigger than all the rest of the movies and that’s not an easy task. This time instead of chasing treasures Captain Jack Sparrow is on the search for Poseidon’s trident which can only lead to bad things happening, right?

Thor : Ragnarok (2017)

Theatrical Release – November 3rd 2017

thor-ragnorak

Much like Captain America this will be Thor’s third stand-alone outing. The first two gave us a glimpse into Asgard but we hope the third will really give us a look into what’s coming and hopefully a good setup for the next Avengers movie.

Coco  (2017)

Theatrical Release – November 22rd 2017

coco

Coco is Disney Pixars only new title being released throughout the 4 year deal with the rest being sequels to already established titles. With a strong Mexican background the film is inspired by Dia de los Muertos which translated means day of the dead. Little is known about the movie so far other than the brilliant director of Toy Story 3, Lee Unkrich will be taking the helm.

Black Panther (2018)

Theatrical Release – February 16th 2018

black-panther

Yet another Marvel character to get their debut is Black Panther. Scheduled to hit theaters in the latter stages of November it’ll give us our first full look into the new hero played by Chadwick Boseman although it’s expected that we see him in an earlier Marvel movie beforehand.

Gigantic (2018)

Theatrical Release – March 9th 2018

jack-and-the-beanstalk-2018

Also at Disney’s D23 Jack and the Beanstalk musical was announced for early 2018. It’s set to be the definitive take on Jack and the Beanstalk and will be complete with a stellar soundtrack composed by Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez who you’ll remember for their award winning soundtrack on Frozen.

The Avengers : Infinity War (2018)

Theatrical Release – May 4th 2018

the-avengers-infinity-war

The first of the two part adventure with the Avengers returning. As fans will know not even the lineup is yet to be confirmed for this movie with most of the cast separating after Age of Ultron. We do know that the two movies will only be a year apart meaning that it should come under the umbrella of the Disney contract with Netflix.

Star Wars : Han Solo Prequel (2018)

Theatrical Release – May 25th 2018

star-wars

You’ll notice as we get further into the future on this list the more sparse the information is about the titles which is why we can’t wait to find out more about the Han Solo prequel that’s scheduled to be released. The movie is set between episodes III and IV and hopefully will give us a much needed insight into how he came into the possession of the Millennium Falcon.

Toy Story 4 (2018)

Theatrical Release – June 15th 2018

toy-story

Toy Story 3 ended on a nice note which is why it was a surprise for many that our favourite toys would be getting a fourth movie. It will however answer a question which has been on every single persons mind since the second movie. Where the heck did Bo Peep get to?

Captain Marvel (2018)

Theatrical Release – July 6th 2018

captain-marvel

One has to wonder if they simply run out of names when they were creating this superhero. With that said it remains one of the best selling heroes for the Marvel universe and a movie on the way set for mid-2018 is a big deal for the Marvel community.

The Avengers : Infinity War – Part II (2019)

Theatrical Release – May 3rd 2019

the-avengers-infinity-war

Part 2 of the two-part Avengers movie

Inhumans (2019)
