Álex Pina’s next Netflix series, Billionaires’ Bunker (known as El Refugio Atómico in Spanish-speaking regions), is now streaming globally! The crime drama will be centered on a group of billionaires who seek refuge in a luxury bunker when World War III is about to break out. Here’s everything you need to know about the new series.

Billionaires’ Bunker is an upcoming Spanish Netflix Original series co-created by Esther Martínez Lobato and Money Heist’s Álex Pina. The series is co-directed by David Barrocal and Jesús Colmenar, who previously worked on Money Heist, and J.M. Cravioto. Madrid-based studio Vancouver Media produces the series.

Esther Martínez Lobato has worked on all of Álex Pina’s Netflix shows so far: Berlin, Sky Rojo, Money Heist, and White Lines. Billionaires’ Bunker will be the fifth Netflix title created by Àlex Pina.

The new series is filmed at Netflix’s sprawling Tres Cantos production hub, with this particular production taking full advantage of a dedicated “volume” like technology that allows projections to be put around the actors in a near 360 environment. We spoke more about this during our set visit for Billionaires’ Bunker last year, where we got to see them shooting several takes during a boardroom scene. The series also shot across Madrid.

When is Billionaires’ Bunker coming to Netflix?

We initially learned that a preliminary release date of September 19th, 2025, has been set for the series, which has since been confirmed via first looks for the show and a date announcement video.

An official trailer for the series has been released by Netflix.

What is the plot of Billionaires’ Bunker?

Here’s the official synopsis for the new series:

“Imagine that World War III is about to break out and a group of billionaires takes refuge in a luxury bunker: Kimera Underground Park. Through screens, they’ll watch the bewildering spectacle of the world they knew collapsing above their heads. As the situation outside becomes increasingly terrifying, they’ll enjoy an underground city with basketball court, restaurant, zen garden, cocktail bar, psychologist’s couch, gym and spa. Their ancient privilege will be reduced to a life adapted to a luxurious hole, an underground universe full of enigmas where a wound from the past will explode between two conflicting families.”

A first-look video was released on May 14th, providing a walk-through of the Kimera Underground Park resort. You can find a transcribed version of what was said in the video below:

“Welcome to the future of real estate investing. Welcome to Quimera Underground Park. My name is Minerva, and I look forward to making your stay enjoyable and satisfying.

We present a series of luxury bunker buildings designed so you and your family can survive the end of the world. The color of the bunker represents the status of our facilities. Blue is for the owners, and orange is for the staff, always at your service.

This is my favorite part. Why have a view from your yard when you can have a view of the Grand Canyon? The views are even better. Our bunker also has a gym, a medical center, a restaurant, and, of course, spacious common areas where you can meet your neighbors.

Each living space is designed to make you feel at home, or even better. Congratulations! You’ve just secured your spot at Quimera Underground Park.

I’m sure it won’t be reduced. What are they? 48, 50, even 70 million euros when it comes to protecting your family. And remember this name, Chimera Underground Park.

The only ones committed to your comfort, even during the end of the world. Don’t hesitate to contact us. We look forward to hearing from you.”

Should you watch Billionaires Bunker?

If the above hasn’t convinced you to give it a go, how about the reviews? There aren’t many public reviews just yet but a few outlets have written about it.

Heaven of Horror wrote, in their positive review, “With eight hour-long episodes, there is plenty of time to cover various storylines and follow the many characters in the series. It does feel a bit soapy at times, but on the other hand, it’s almost kitsch entertainment, so it…” Meanwhile, Diego Batlle wrote in his review that the series relied heavily on “clichés” to tell its formulaic story.

In our review, where we gave it a 2 out of 5 stars, we concluded, “Even though the show delivers on high-scale, universe-building European productions only Netflix can execute, hokey character work and a departure from its promising premise make this new show a sometimes entertaining though forgettable ride.”
