Two new Netflix Original movies dropped on Netflix this week. The biggest movie out of the two was Tau but perhaps the better of the two movies is ‘Callibre’. The British movie is now available on Netflix in every region. Here’s all the information you need before going into the movie and after you finish watching.

Before you watch

Movie Background Information

The movie first premiered on June 22nd at the Edinburgh International Film Festival where it scooped several nominations and awards. It then released on Netflix globally on June 29th.

  • Directed and written by Matt Palmer who is known for The Gas Man (2014) and Island (2007)
  • Runtime: 104 minutes
  • Genre: Thriller

What’s the movie about?

The movie takes place in Scotland and is about two old boarding school friends going away for a weekend of hunting or stalking as they refer to it in the movie. After a rowdy first night, the pair stumbles on their first day of hunting and makes decisions which set in motion events that’ll change their lives forever.

Review Scores

Reviews for the new movie at the moment are pretty strong. Rotten Tomatoes has 7 reviews as of the time of writing all of which average out as 8/10 making the movie fresh. IMDb has it slightly lower at 6.6 out of 10.

Perhaps one of the best reviews for the movie comes from Jamie Dunn at The Skinny who says: “What gives Calibre its power in the end is its relentless momentum and a moral heft that should leave you uneasy as the credits roll.”

Our Take

This is a great movie that demonstrates why Netflix should continue producing its own movies. It’s a movie you wouldn’t likely travel out to see in a cinema but one you’ll be glad you did watch.

Jack Lowden (plays Vaughn) puts in a convincing performance and you can clearly see his evolution throughout the movie particularly in the last show where he’s staring at us in the camera.

The atmosphere in the village is so thick you can taste it. The pub scenes, in particular, paint a bleak picture of the village and conveys an underlying angst.

Our only complaint is that there are some strange weird dialogue choices in places and the excessively long camera pans at the beginning that could paint the movie as a little amateurish.

Ending Explained

Why did they make Vaughn shoot Marcus?

In the last scenes in the village, Vaughn is forced to shoot Marcus. Logan explains that he negotiated for the life of Vaugh. The negotiation basically concluded that there had to be an eye for an eye but if a villager

Why was the village in decline?

Throughout the movie, we get constant undertones that the village isn’t doing so well financially. That’s first clear when we hear that fewer and fewer people are coming to the village to stay and hunt. Logan, who seemingly acts on behalf of the village was asking Marcus who works investment to try and secure some for the village.

Other tidbits of information

One of the best lines in the movie and one that is not repeated but rather felt in a pinnacle moment in the movie is ‘remove all emotion in it and let instinct kick in’.

Can you visit the locations?

Although the movie is entirely set in the Scottish highlands, the place names such as Ravens Fell Road and Drumrain don’t actually exist. If you’re looking to go on holiday in Scotland, the highlands should absolutely be on your list of things to do.
