Batwoman – The CW / Warner Brothers

In recent years some of the most lucrative programming Netflix has had access to is from The CW. But is Batwoman season 1 coming to Netflix? With the series now starting up for its first season on The CW, we look at whether the series will be headed to Netflix which, unfortunately, doesn’t look likely.

First of all some background on who and what Batwoman is. Batwoman is an upcoming superhero drama set in the Arrowverse, based on the comic book character of the same name created by DC Comics. The majority of the Arrowverse currently is on Netflix in the United States including the cross-over events.

Ruby Rose as Batwoman – The CW

The female caped crusader will become the sixth superhero series produced by the CW after Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, DC Legends, and Black Lightning. Starring in the role is the popular model and actress Ruby Rose, who’s previously starred in Orange is the New Black, John Wick, and The Meg.

The character of Kate Kane’s Batwoman first debuted in issue #7 of Batman in the new 52 series. DC Comics effort towards diversity helped with a modern retelling of the character, thus leading Batwoman to be of Jewish descent and a lesbian.

With the pilot picked up by CW in January and it’s been announced the series is set to debut later in the fall of 2019.

Why Batwoman won’t coming to Netflix US

Despite Netflix US having access to CW content previously, it has been confirmed that Batwoman will not be coming to Netflix.

Earlier this year Netflix lost its contract with The CW and the news that new titles from 2019 will be shopped individually.

The original report said: “I hear WBTV’s Batwoman is earmarked for the upcoming WarnerMedia streaming service. ” with them then quoting Warner CCO who said, “we’re very interested in putting that on our platform.”

This means newer CW titles like Batwoman, Nancy Drew and Katy Keene will be licensed separately.

In July 2019, thanks to the first look at the HBO Max platform, we know that Batwoman will be streaming on their platform exclusively. That’s unless Netflix manages to share the streaming license which seems unlikely.

Will Batwoman be coming to Netflix in other regions?

First of all, there’s no news that Batwoman will be coming to Netflix in other regions. But for some regions, there is room to speculate why Batwoman could stream on Netflix outside of the US.

The UK

In the United Kingdom, the following shows currently air on Sky, these are The Flash, Arrow, Supergirl and DC Legends of Tomorrow. The only DC superhero set in the Arrowverse not to appear on Sky is Black Lightning, which is available to stream on Netflix and is classified as an Original.

We have reason to believe that Batwoman could potentially come to Netflix UK as an Original thanks to Black Lightning and another popular DC show Titans. At the moment, however, the series remains unsold in the UK.

The popular DC superhero ensemble show is a Netflix Original in the UK and is one of the most popular releases in the region for 2019.

Canada

For Canada, the latest episodes from The CW air week to week on Netflix. Depending on the future of the Warner streaming service outside of the US will dictate if Batwoman will be coming to Netflix Canada.

Australia

The Arrowverse content is split between different streaming services in Australia. Stan and Foxtel will likely be the home for Batwoman down under.

Rest of the World

As for Non-English speaking regions our knowledge is very limited. Netflix does have a strong presence across the world so it’s highly likely Batwoman will become available to those in Latin America and Asia.
