With the upcoming live adaptation of The Lion King set to release in 2019, it’s only fitting that everyone gets round to watching the 1994 cartoon classic. That being said is Disney’s animal kingdom masterpiece even on Netflix? Let’s find out if The Lion King is streaming on Netflix!
Over the past decade, Disney has set a trend to adopt some of their classic cartoon titles into live-action. With the overwhelming success of titles such as The Jungle Book and Beauty and the Beast, it was only a matter of time before The Lion King received the same treatment. That being said it will be a gigantic task for Disney to improve upon their cartoon masterpiece. Either way, it gives us the fans an excuse to go back and watch it.
What is the Lion King?
The Lion King has been compared to that of a reimagining of the classic Shakespeare tragedy Hamlet. While this is often debated, for what we know the film was created alongside another Disney movie, Pocohantas. Upon release, the creators may have never imagined the success the film would receive. The Lion King won two awards at the Academy and a Broadway adaptation for the film has gone on to become one of the most successful musicals in theatre history. On a budget of $45 Million, by the end of its box office run The Lion King made $968.5 Million.
Taking place in the Savannah of Africa, the story is centered around young Lion cub Simba. Under the tutelage of his majestic father Mufasa, Simba is to become the eventual King of Pride Rock. After a terrible accident that causes Simba to leave the pride behind, his uncle Scar usurps the crown from Mufasa. It will be many years before Simba will return to take back the title of King from Scar and face his Uncle in an epic final showdown.
Is The Lion King on Netflix US?
Unfortunately, The Lion King is not available in the US on Netflix. No other streaming service in the US is streaming the title either?
With the eventual release of Disney’s upcoming streaming service Disney Life, all Disney titles will be available to stream on the service.
What about other regions?
In the United Kingdom, you will need a subscription to Now TV or Sky Go.
For fans in Australia, you’ll need to rent the film from Amazon or Youtube. As for fans in Canada, unfortunately, the film is only available to rent on platforms such as Itunes and Amazon.
The only regions outside of the US streaming The Lion King is India, Hong Kong, South Korea, Singapore, and Thailand.
