The Lord of the Rings – Picture: New Line Cinema
Lord of the Rings is one of the greatest movie trilogies in the history of cinema and as a result, millions of Netflixers go searching on Netflix to rewatch all three of the Lord of the Rings movies. Here’s the streaming status of the Lord of the Rings films.
It’s now been sixteen years since Fellowship of the Ring landed on our screens and the other two films following shortly thereafter. The adaptation of the JRR Tolkien books by Peter Jackson was incredible. The adaptations are regarded as some of the best and feature some fantastic talent, set pieces and possibly the best soundtrack ever recorded.
The movie franchise is a sequel to The Hobbit trilogy and focuses on Frodo Baggin’s story who is burdened with the one ring and has to carry it to Mordor to destroy it.

If you’re aware of how licensing works on Netflix you’ll know that Netflix has to pay over money to the studio holders to get the rights to stream content. As you can imagine, streaming movies isn’t cheap and in particular, popular movies get very pricey. That’s why when Netflix does get big-budget popular movies, they don’t stay on for long.
Lord of the Rings History on Netflix US
The first movie has already appeared on Netflix US twice this year. It first rocked up in January before being removed a couple of months later. It was added again to Netflix on August 1st, 2018. Sadly, only the first movie is on Netflix. As we explained just recently, the rights to the second and third movie have recently moved from Hulu to Starz.
On January 19th, 2019, the first movie was removed from Netflix leaving 0 movies left on the service.
In Summer 2019, it was announced that The Two Towers ad The Return of The King would come to Netflix on September 1st, 2019.
In October 2019, the two movies have been listed for removal on November 1st, 2019.
Sadly, with Amazon likely going to be picking up the rights soon and the movie franchise likely being a staple of the newly announced HBO Max service, don’t expect LoTR to be returning to Netflix once November 1st passes.
Netflix UK, Canada, and the Netherlands Streams All Three Movies
All three movies were added to Netflix UK in November 2018. It secured the licenses from Sky who had held them for multiple years before. It’s one of the few English speaking regions with one movie let alone all three. As of January 2019, all three movies remain on the service.
Where is Lord of the Rings on Netflix?
Some regions of Netflix are streaming the trilogy of movies. Here’s a breakdown of which region is streaming each movie.
- Fellowship of the Ring can be found on Netflix in Argentina, Brazil, Poland, India and Spain.
- The Two Towers can be found on Netflix in Canada, Argentina, Brazil, India and Spain.
- The Return of the King can also be found in Canada, Argentina, Brazil, India and Spain.
What about the TV Series?
You may have heard over the past few months that Netflix was in the running to be one of the providers looking to create a new TV series around the books. Sadly for Netflix, they lost out to Amazon who reportedly paid a billion dollars to secure the rights. This could have consequences with Netflix too meaning that Amazon will more than likely have first dibs on the movies moving forward given they’ve now got a vested interest in the franchise.
Unfortunately, without Game of Thrones on Netflix either, Netflix is pretty light when it comes to action series set in a fantasy world.
