Netflix is in the mood for sci-fi in 2018 as it’s just acquired another sci-fi movie right off the back of the latest Cloverfield movie which landed on Netflix last week after the Superbowl.

The news comes from Variety who exclusively broke the news yesterday and is the latest acquire from Universal who also owns Paramount. The movie was initially slated to be released in cinemas until last month it was pulled off of Universal’s release schedule. Whether this reflects the quality of the film is yet to be seen. Given Netflix’s previous acquisitions in the movie department from films originally intending to be released in cinemas, we suspect that this movie was being predicted to be a failure.

No official release date has been announced as of yet but we do have quite a few snippets of information thanks to yesterdays announcement and other news that was released beforehand.

Here’s everything we know about the movie so far.

Movie Premise

Directed by Ben Young and featuring the writing of Spenser Cohen, Eric Heisserer and Brad Kane, the movie is about a father who has a recurring dream about losing his family but his nightmare becomes reality when the Earth is invaded. The movie then continues from there. Expect sci-fi and supernatural elements plus many traits from thrillers.

Cast of Extinction

The two mains stars of the movie are Michael Peña and Lizzy Caplan. Peña is mostly known for his roles in movies such as CHiPs (2017), Ant-Man (2015), The Martian (2015), End of Watch (2012), and Fury (2014).

Lizzy Caplan is both known for movies and TV series having starred in Masters of Sex for the previous few years and also featured in Now You See Me, Mean Girls, The Interview and coincidentally, the original Cloverfield.

Also featuring in the cast includes:

  • Mick Colter (“Luke Cage”)
  • Emma Booth (“Once Upon a Time”, “Glitch”)
  • Israel Broussard (“The Bling Ring”)
  • Tom Riley (“Da Vinci’s Demons”)
  • Lilly Aspell (“Wonder Woman”)

James McAvoy was the originally intended star for the movie according to the writer of the movie (who subsequently left).

Release Date

No official release date is known just yet, although we’re expecting it to arrive in the fall lineup which is currently looking a little slim for movie releases.
