Season 5 of Orange is the New Black landed last summer and with the new season expected in the summer, you’re probably looking for information regarding what’s going to happen and when it’s going to be out. Here’s what we know so far about the next season of Orange is the New Black.

Netflix’s second longest running Netflix Original series has continued breaking ground and held the crown of being the most popular Netflix Original series only to have been overtaken by Stranger Things in recent years. Originally based on the real-life experience of Piper Kerman, the series has evolved to develop some fantastic characters but fork away from the book that the series is initially based on. The series has received

Season 5 was the most intense season yet given that the whole season took place over the course of a couple of days at the height of a full-blown prison riot thanks to cuts in the prison’s budget.

Update: Season 6 is now available on Netflix worldwide – looking for the latest information on season 7? Check out our preview of everything we know so far.

Orange is the New Black Season 6 Renewal Status and Final Season?

Official Renewal Status: Renewed

Netflix tends to renew its show on an annual basis shortly after the most recent series drop. They do this to assess the figures on each of the shows and whether or not they can justify spending the money on more seasons. In the case of Orange is the New Black, Netflix broke its tradition by renewing the series for three more seasons after season 4. That means we’re definitely due season 6 and indeed the seventh season too which would likely wrap up the show.

What to Expect for Season 6?

We expect the show to return its usual format where it’s based on several weeks and with any luck, the prison would’ve returned to its normal self. We’ll likely continue to see plenty of developments with the main characters and also the introduction of more just to keep the show fresh. We also suspect we may see Piper be released at some point so could see how she adjusts outside of prison.

What stage is production at?

We’re likely now in the final stages as filming has wrapped. In fact, Laura Prepon tweeted out on the final day of filming which occurred on February 8th, 2018.

Will season 6 be more grounded?

One thing that we and countless fans of the show caught onto last season is how ridiculous some of the dialog and storylines had gotten a bit over the top. In fact, we categorically stated that the show had jumped the shark. Although we don’t know much about the next season, we hope that the show becomes a little more grounded.

Expect a time jump in season 6

The show’s creator, Jenji Kohan has hinted at a time jump to occur in season 6 at one point or another. The reason for this is that the show can adapt to real-world events that happen outside of the prison. Jenji specifically mentioned the Trump election as one of the reasons why they want OiTNB to come to the present day.

When will Orange is the New Black Season 6 be on Netflix?

We were expecting a June/July 2018 release date which was confirmed on June 5th. All episodes of the next season will be arriving on Netflix on July 27th, 2018.

Season 5 is finally available on DVD

On April 5th, 2018, Netflix finally released season 5 on DVD and Bluray meaning those who want to watch outside of Netflix, can.

What to watch in the meantime…

As we’re currently waiting for the next season, you probably want some titles to fill out your time. The most obvious title to watch if you haven’t already is Wentworth, the Australian prison drama which has been hailed as the better series of the two. If you haven’t already checked out Jenji Kohan’s other Netflix series, Glow, you probably should.
