Stranger Things season 3 was one hell of a ride. With more ups and downs than a rollercoaster, we’ve been left with a tremendous amount to think about for season 4. The most important question of all is whether or not Stranger Things will be returning for a fourth season. We can happily say it’s all but confirmed, but when will Stranger Things season be coming to Netflix? Let’s find out.
Stranger Things is a Netflix Original series created by the Duffer Brothers. Debuting in July 2016, it didn’t take long before Stranger Things was acknowledged as one of the best shows on Netflix. By the end of season 2, it has been acknowledged as the flagship show of Netflix. After a wait that lasted nearly two years, Stranger Things returned with its best produced season to date.
We’ll be updating this article on a regular basis so make sure to keep your eyes peeled for more Stranger Things news at What’s on Netflix.
Stranger Things Season 4 Netflix Renewal Status
Official Netflix Renewal Status: Pending (Last Updated: 04/07/2019)
Even though Netflix hasn’t “officially” renewed Stranger Things for season 4 it is “definitely happening.” This was all but confirmed by executive producer and director Shaun Levy in an interview with Collider in April 2018. he had the following to say:
I mean I will say we have a good sense of stuff that happens in Season Four. Season Four is definitely happening. There’s very much the possibility of a season beyond that one, that’s currently undecided. And what I would just say is part of the chaos and fun of this particular show is that while the Duffers and the writer’s room and we producers outline the entire season, the Duffers really use the writing process to revisit, reassess and question all of their prior assumption.
So even though we always start off with a good sense of the major arcs of the season. We’re always ready for shifts and surprises because if the Duffers stumble into a different or surprising inspiration while they rewrite the script, we’re going to follow that inspiration and throw out some ideas in order to embrace some new ones that are more exciting. And I have no doubt that Season 3 will be no exception.
We expect Netflix to confirm the news very soon. The series is the flagship show now and fans will be demanding news.
Stranger Things Season 3 Ending Explained
*SEASON 3 SPOILERS BELOW*
Season 3 left us with more questions than answers but the story for season 4 has been laid out nicely.
First of all… Rest in peace Jim Hopper. Or is he actually dead? In the dramatic beatdown with the Russian assassin, Hopper was able to get the upper hand, throwing the Russian into the “Key” to the upside down. The resulting fight caused damage to the machine, throwing up a wall of electric energy trapping Hopper on the other side (we’d seen in episode one the electricity was fatal).
Knowing he had no chance of survival, Hopper accepted his fate. With a peaceful but solemn look on his face, Hopper wordlessly said goodbye to Joyce. Through pained tears, Joyce twisted the keys needed to shut down the machine. With the Mindflayer’s connection to the upside-down broken, its conduit body in the real world was destroyed. The outburst of energy would kill the remaining suited scientists and when Joyce came to, Hopper was gone.
Hopper’s message to Sam Owens (Former Acting Director of Operations at Hawkins Lab) was received and the U.S. Military was sent to Starcourt Mall to clean up the mess. Three months after the battle of Starcourt, the Russian base from the first episode is still shown to be active. Two Russian guards are shown to be selecting someone for an unknown task. One of the guards asks “The American?” heavily hinting that Hopper had survived and somehow ended up in Russia.
The American is most likely Hopper. With the Russians working on a key to the upside down in their Kamchatka base, it’s not a stretch to suggest that Hopper may have been teleported and not disintegrated. He may have possibly been trapped in the Upside Down until Russian soldiers found him.
Is the Mindflayer dead?
The Mindflayer may have been defeated but it definitely isn’t dead. It was made clear that the body the Mindflayer was using was just a conduit and not the real deal. Why the Mindflayer could still use its power was because of the Russians opening the barrier between our world and the upside down. When Joyce shut down the key to the upside down, any connection to our world was severed, therefore the Mindflayer could no longer control the makeshift body.
Even though the body died, the Mindflayer is very much alive, only it’s now trapped in the upside down. The scheming creature will definitely be returning and likely with a vengeance against those that thwarted him not once but twice.
With Hopper gone, little remained to keep Joyce and her family in Hawkins. Ready to move on with her life, she stuck to the plan she told Hopper and moved away with Will, Jonathan, and Eleven.
Now without a father, it makes perfect sense that Eleven has been adopted by Joyce. This meant she would also be leaving Hawkins. In a tearful goodbye, Eleven revealed to Mike she heard his confession of love and returns the feelings, kissing him goodbye. Joyce, having found Hopper’s heart-to-heart note would give the paper to Eleven. The note would reveal Hopper’s acceptance of Eleven growing older but he would miss the moments he had his daughter to himself, of course “for the sake of you dear old dad” please keep the door open three inches.
Nancy and Jonathan’s relationship is in question with the latter moving away from Hawkins with his family. Will, now ready to move on leaves his Dungeons and Dragons books to the donation box. Dustin and Lucas would give the box to Lucas’ younger sister Erica in hope that she would give in to her inner nerd.
As the Byers family and Eleven begin the drive to their new home, emotions run high and tears are shed. It’s unclear where they are moving to but it certainly sounds many miles away from Hawkins. This won’t be the final goodbye to the Byers and Eleven as Hawkins will undoubtedly come under threat once again from the upside down.
It looks like the Russian base wasn’t a failure after all. After avoiding “The American” the two Russian guards selected a different prisoner to be taken. Taking the unnamed convict to the deepest part of Kamchatka, they would lock him in another cage, albeit a larger one. Unlocking a small door that lead into the cage, what appeared to be a Demodog at first was revealed to be a Demogorgon!
It hasn’t been established if there’s more than one Demogorgon but more importantly, the Russians have their hands on one. This means either the original Demogorgon lived or the Russians caught themselves a new monster. Regardless the Russians must have found another way to breach the upside down or the resulting encounter in Hawkins was enough for the scientists at Kamchatka to make a breakthrough with their key.
Despite the best efforts of Hopper and co. it looks like the upside down is still poses a threat. If the Demogorgon gets loose (and it will) how long is it before the Mindflayer returns.

Stranger Things Season 4 Netflix Release Date
Suffice to say subscribers will be really ticked off if the wait for season 4 is as long as the wait for the third. By now we’d safely assume the Duffer Brothers have season 4 mapped out. It also wouldn’t be too surprising if the script has been written.
The major problem that faces the release of date of season 4 is the demand for the actors in the series. Once the popularity of Stranger Things exploded so did the demand for actors involved such as David Harbour and Millie-Bobbie Brown.
Contract details are obviously under wraps but it’s likely Stranger Things would take priority over any future projects cast members were set to be involved with.
The potential release date
The wait could be quite extensive as it is to be expected for such a show like Stranger Things. At the very earliest we’d like to think Stranger Things could make a return in the Fall or Winter of 2020. Sadly a more realistic release date will be in 2021. As to when in 2021 is anyone’s guess at this time, but once production begins on season 4 we’ll have a much better idea.
