the-get-down-season-1-previewThe Get Down is setting its sights on becoming the biggest Netflix Original focusing on a time period that’s not often successful. For many, this will be the first time you’ve been introduced to the Netflix series that’s set to transport you back to Brooklyn during the 1970’s, so we figured it’d be a good idea to get everything we know about the show including the cast, soundtrack, director, plot and facts about the show and compile it all into one place making you ready for the first half of the show.

What’s the show about?

This series is heading back in time to 1970’s in the streets of the Bronx for a show that focuses on the culture and music of the time and place. It focuses specifically on a group of teenagers during said time and their involvement in the music scene, crime scene and romance. It’s a musical as much as it is a drama so expect us to cover all the tracks they cover in the show. Obvious comparisons will be made to the HBO show Vinyl which was rather short lived but hopefully Netflix can allow this type of show to thrive and flourish.

Director of The Get Down

Normally we don’t focus too much on the directors in our preview but in this case we think it’s absolutely necessary. The series has been directed, written and produced by Baz Luhrmann. If you’re unfamiliar with that name, you may not be with his catalog of movies and TV shows he’s created.

Among the best of his catalog is The Great Gatsby (2013), Australia (2008), No. 5 the Film (2004), Romeo + Juliet (1996) and Moulin Rouge! (2001).

What can this tell us about the show? Well it’s the plot isn’t going to be necessarily painted out clearly in front of you, you can also expect a fine attention to detail when it comes to recreating the sounds and feel of the show.

The Cast of The Get Down

the-get-down-castMuch like the recent Stranger Things, Netflix has opted for a young cast for this title and that makes sense given the context as to where we are. Jaden Smith is the biggest name among the cast although he’s only scheduled to be in 6 of the 12 episodes. Here’s the rest of the cast :

  • Shameik Moore as Shoalin Fantastic
  • Justice Smith as Ezekiel
  • Herizen F. Guardiola as Mylene Cruz
  • Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Cadillac
  • Skylan Brooks as Ra-Ra
  • Teamaine Brown Jr as Boo-Boo
  • Mamoudou Ahtie as Grandmaster Flash
  • Jaden Smith as Marcus Kipling

Release Schedule for The Get Down

As you may have heard, The Get Down season 1 is a total of 12 hour long episodes however on its release date, which is Friday August 12th, only the first half or 6 episodes will be arriving. This is not too dissimilar to a couple of other Netflix Originals which are being split into two halves presumably to pad the Netflix Original lineup. We can expect the second half of the season to arrive sometime in 2017 as we understand it was all filmed in one continuous run. We’ll have firmer details in the coming months surrounding part 2.
