With the release of season 2, this marks another overwhelming success for the dark-comedy series The End of the F***ing World. But where does the series go from here? Sadly, it looks like we aren’t going to see any future seasons, so here’s why The End of the F***ing World isn’t returning for season 3.

The End of the F***ing World is a British dark-comedy drama series, based on the graphic novel of the same name by Charles Forman. The series creator, Charlie Covell, previously starred as an actress in popular British comedy series such as The Inbetweeners, Peep Show and Misfits. Thanks to the success of The End of the F***ing World, Netflix has ordered a new series, Kaos, by Charlie Covell. The series will be a reimagining of Greek Mythology and will consist of ten episodes.

Why The End of the F***ing World isn’t Returning for Season 3

Can we ever have too much of a good thing? Certainly, especially for television shows that go beyond a natural end. That’s the sentiment shared by The End of the F*** World creator Charlie Covell.

Multiple news sources have shared Covell’s thoughts on a third season, but her thoughts on the future of the series came from an interview with the Radio Times:

I think, for me, that’s it now. Yeah, that’s done. I think to try and eke more out would be wrong, I like where we’ve left it.

Put it this way, if for some reason we hadn’t been allowed to do season two, I would have been really gutted. Which I think shows that it was the right thing to do – for me, anyway. And I think I like where we end it [in season two], and yeah, it feels right for the story.

But you never know, and you obviously you can’t write for what people want,” she adds. “I think you have to work out what’s right for the characters and the story— I sound like such a d*** saying that but I think you can’t, you’re not doing fan fiction.

Thanks to the interview with Charlie Covell, it’s been made clear that a third season isn’t happening.

Does the story require a third season?

While fans may demand to see more James and Alyssa, which is understandable, the story ended on a sweet note.

To delve further into the relationship between the titular pair may do more damage than good. We finally got to see Alyssa admit her feelings for James, with the latter excited but accepting that Alyssa needs time before their relationship can blossom.

James’ story has also come full circle. After spending much of his time spent distant from his humanity, it’s thanks to Alyssa that he was able to reclaim it back. With James finally able to move on with his life, reclaiming his humanity, and getting the girl, there isn’t much further to explore.

If the series were to continue, it’s hard to see where the story would pick up. To reiterate an earlier point, if the story were to focus on the pairs’ awkward relationship as a couple, it could do more harm than good. In the hands of the correct writer, it could work, but without Charlie Covell at the helm, we lack the confidence that the story will work.

What is the online demand for a third season?

Further tweets show there is a high demand for a third season. Fans will be able to go back and watch the series to their heart’s content, and of least the story has been consistent throughout. To end on a sweet note was the perfect way to end the story for Alyssa and James.

When will The End of the F***ing World season 2 arrive on Netflix UK?

Subscribers in the UK will have to wait until 2020 before the second season comes to Netflix.

For now, the series will be available to stream on Channel 4’s streaming service.
