Following the release of the new re-boot ‘Tomb Raider’ staring Alicia Vikander. We thought it would be a good idea to take a look if any other of the Tomb Raider films are available to stream on Netflix.

The Tomb Raider Franchise began back in 1996 as an action-adventure video game released for the Sega Saturn and the PlayStation. The game followed the English archaeologist Lara Croft as she searches for ancient artifacts and treasures, often linked with the supernatural. The critically acclaimed game was declared by many as one of the best games of the time and sold over 7 million copies. It was a great start to the franchise and paved the way for many more game, and movies to come.

The first movie adaptation of Lara Croft was in 2001 in the film Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. Angelina Jolie played the adventurer as she sets out looking for an artifact, which was also being pursued by the Illuminati. Although it was not quite successful as its video game counter-part Jolie still went on to star in a sequel titled Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life.

Back in 2013 a re-boot and the game revitalized interest in the Heroine, and is likely the reason for the new film’s release.

There have been a total of 16 Tomb Raider video games, with the 17th game ‘Shadow of the Tomb Raider’ due to release on April 27, 2018.

Below we have put together a small table including the films and which region they’re available on. Back in February of 2018 Netflix viewers that reside in the US were given access to the first 2001 film. At the time of writing this, this is the only recent development, with the other film by Paramount Pictures not available anywhere on Netflix.

Title Region Available
Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001) US
Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life (2003) N/A
Tomb Raider (2018) To Be Released

This is an Updated list, it may change in the future in any titles are added.

Will the new film be coming to Netflix in the future?

Now, whether you’re planning to go see this new film in the cinema or not, it would be good to know if we’re to expect it’s arrival on Netflix at any time in the foreseeable future.

One factor that we often look at when estimating whether a title will be coming to Netflix is its production company. The first two movies were produced mainly by Paramount Pictures, but the latest addition is by GK Films and Warner Brothers, who acquired the rights back in 2011.

Warner Brothers struck a deal a couple years ago with ABC, prioritizing their titles towards ABC’s online services. It’s still perfectly possible that the film will come to Netflix, but at the current time, we don’t see it arriving for at least a couple of years.
