The popular FX series Fargo debuted back in 2014 and since then has had it’s first three seasons brought to Netflix. But many fans, including all of us at What’s on Netflix are wondering whether FX will be producing another season, and when it’ll be coming to Netflix. Below we have done our best to cover both these topics.
For those who maybe want a bit more background information on the series. The black comedy/crime show was inspired by the 1996 film of the same name, written, directed and produced by the Coen Brothers. The film takes place in the snowy state of Minnesota and follows a pregnant police officer investigating numerous roadside homicides. It was immediately met with critical acclaim and won quite a few awards, even being named one of the 100 greatest American movies of all time by the American Film Institute.
This definitely set the bar pretty high for the new TV series, but overall many agree that the show created by Noah Hawley delivered.
The first season was set in 2006 and starred Martin Freeman, Billy Bob Thornton, Allison Tolman and Colin Hanks. It followed both the bumbling insurance salesman Lester (Freeman) as he attempts to cover up his violent and failing life, and Deputy Molly Solverson (Tolman) as she teams up with a Duluth police officer in order to solve a series of murders in the area. The first season won three Primetime Emmy’s and two Golden Globes.
The second season was met with pretty similar critical success and this time takes place in 1979, depicting events that were mentioned and pointed to briefly in the previous season. Patrick Wilson, Ted Danson, Kirsten Dunst and Jesse Plemons were amongst the new cast.
In April 2017, the third and most recent season released, this time set in 2010. Once again, just like the two seasons that came before it, it was received extremely positively, especially Ewan McGregor’s performance as two quite different twin brothers. Ewan plays a probation officer determined to get achieve a better and wealthier life, like his brother Emmit the “Parking Lot King of Minnesota”.
The plot of Season 4?
As many of you will probably know, being an anthology series the show will follow a different story each season, set in a different era with a whole new cast. Despite this, all the stories have similarities and are linked together somehow.
We can pretty safely say that season 4 will take place roughly in the same location, around Fargo in North Dacota and Minnesota. What we don’t know currently is who will make up the cast, and what year the series will take place in. It’ll also be very interesting to see what cast they get, as the show seems to have no trouble getting A-list talent.
We should get more information about this later in 2018, and if so, we will update this article.
Season 4 Renewal Status
Official Renewal Status: Renewed (Last updated: 22/02/2018)
FX has officially confirmed that Fargo will be coming back for at least one more season. Due to the first three seasons being so popular among both viewers and critics there was no real doubt about the shows return.
The CEO of the American broadcaster John Landgraf said on a press tour:
“Noah Hawley has an idea that excited me enormously for a fourth cycle of Fargo”
Fargo as a Netflix Original
In a select number of regions, Fargo is actually classed as a Netflix Original meaning it’s exclusively available on Netflix in those regions. Some of these areas include the Netherlands and other parts of Europe. This means that season 4 will come sooner to Netflix than in other parts of the world.
When will season 4 of Fargo be on Netflix?
The series is slated for release on the FX Network sometime in 2019, but from experience with past seasons, we know it won’t be coming to Netflix straight away. (Unless you live in a region that classes the show as a Netflix Original).
Both series 1 and 3 premiered in April so it’s perfectly likely to suggest that season 3 will initially release on FX in April 2019.
But Regarding the Netflix release in regions that hold Fargo, we’re looking at more like a December 2019/January 2020 release. If we receive any more information, once again we will be updating this article with any new details. So make sure to keep this page bookmarked.
Will Fargo come to Netflix in the United States?
Simply put, it doesn’t look like it. Due to the contract with FOX and FX failing to be renewed in 2017, all FX and FOX titles are being removed from US Netflix throughout 2018, and no new series will be arriving. Hulu does host Fargo in the US but you would have to a while for any new seasons to become available, for example, season 3 is still not on Hulu.
