A ghost, a vampire and a werewolf all live under one roof. Aidan is a 200-year-old Vampire, Josh is the werewolf working as an orderly at the hospital and lastly, Sally is the Ghost that haunts the home they reside in after she was murdered by her former fiancee. The trio helps one another with the trouble that comes with living a double life and the struggle of holding on to their humanity.

The series is based off the British BBC series of the same. The show also follows the plot of the original show very closely so fans of the BBC version of the show may be interested in how the Americanised version follows the story. As a homage to the BBC series the vampire Aidan is named after British actor Aidan Turner who played Mitchel the vampire.

Blade

Director: Stephen Norrington
Cast: Wesley Snipes, Kris Kristofferson, Stephen Dorff, Traci Lords, N’Bushe Wright

Blade is the half-mortal/half-immortal vampire hunter. He was given the power of immortality after his mother died giving birth to him after she was attacked by a vampire. Now an adult Blade, him and his human friend Abraham wage a secret war on the vampires.

Not many people realize that Blade is actually a Marvel character and you could argue that Blade is really the first R-rated ‘superhero’ movie. The role of Blade is arguably Wesley Snipes career-defining role with the franchise going on to become a trilogy.

Blade 2

Director: Guillermo del Toro
Cast: Wesley Snipes, Norman Reedus, Ron Pearlman, Kris Kristofferson, Luke Goss, Donnie Yen
Run-time/Episodes: 117 Minutes
IMDB Rating: 6.7/10 | Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 57%

2 years after the events of the first movie, Blade returns to take on a new race of mutated ‘super’ vampires. Threatening both human and vampire kind alike, Blade is forced to join forces with a  group of elite vampires to fight the ‘reaper virus’.

David S Goyer returned to write the story of the film while Guillermo Del Toro directed. Wesley Snipe also returned to reprise his Role. The film debuted in cinemas across the United States in 2002 and grossed over $150 million. Fans of The Walking Dead will recognize a visibly younger Norman Reedus.

Castlevania (Adult Cartoon) Netflix Original

Director: Multiple
Cast: Richard Armitage, James Callis, Alejandro Reynoso, Graham MacTavish, Tony Amendola
Run-time/Episodes: 4 (1 Season) – Season 2 release 26th of October
IMDB Rating: 8.0/10 | Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 79%

After his wife is burned at the stake after being falsely accused of witchcraft, the vampire Count Vlad Dracula Tepes declares that all the people of Wallachia will pay with their lives. He summons an army of monsters and demons which overruns the country, causing the people to live lives of fear and distrust. To combat this, the disgraced monster hunter Trevor Belmont takes up arms against Dracula’s forces, aided by the magician Sypha Belnades and Dracula’s dhampir son Alucard.

Before finding a permanent home on Netflix, Castlevania had gone through a production nightmare, it wasn’t until Netflix picked up the series that production on Castlevania was able to begin.

The series is based on the video game franchise of the same name. The first season only had 4 episodes for its first season but for its second outing it will have double with 8 episodes in total. Season 2 of Castlevania is due for release on October 26th.

Corbin Nash

Director: Ben Jagger
Cast: Corey Feldman, Malcolm McDowell, Rutger Hauer, Bruce Davison, Dean S. Jagger
Run-time/Episodes: 94 Minutes
IMDB Rating: 5.1/10 | Rotten Tomatoes Rating: N/A%

In search of his parent’s killer rogue detective Corbin Nash is murdered after an encounter with a vampire. Reborn as the ultimate killer, Nash stops at nothing to get revenge.

The movie wasn’t met with the best of receptions by critics but the film is an enjoyable B-list vampire movie. While there may be potential in a franchise it’ll be interesting to see if any further films are made. The most highly praised aspect of the film is Corey Feldman’s portrayal of the trans-vampire queeny where he was able to be more eccentric with a colourful and diverse character.

Family Blood

Director: Sonny Mallhi
Cast: Vinessa Shaw, James Ransome, Colin Ford, Ajino Alexus, Eloise Lushina
Run-time/Episodes: 92 Minutes
IMDB Rating: 4.2/10 | Rotten Tomatoes Rating: N/A%

Recovering drug addict Ellie moves to a new city with her teenage kids Kyle and Amy. After meeting Christopher, her life soon falls apart after his gift to take away her addiction is replaced by a new form of addiction, one more powerful than her cravings for drugs.

This is another B-list Vampire movie on the list but once again, there’s a massive appeal for these types of movies. Unfortunately for this title, production was confined due to its budget but don’t let that put you off, it is still worth a watch on a horror binge day.

From Dusk Till Dawn (TV Series)

Director: Multiple
Cast: D.J Cotrona, Zane Holtz, Eiza Gonzalez, Jesse Garcia, Madison Davenport
Run-time/Episodes: 30 Episodes (3 Seasons)
IMDB Rating: 7.0/10 | Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 69%

As they head for Mexico, the brothers meet the Fuller family heading the same way. They take the family hostage and continue the trip in the Fullers’ RV. Chaos breaks out when they stop at a bar to meet the cartel king who offered them shelter.

The TV series which spanned 3 seasons before being axed is hard to compare with its movie equivalent but still holds up as a fantastic vampire binge.

Hemlock Grove

Director: Multiple
Cast: Famke Janssen, Bill Skarsgård, Landon Liboiron, Joel de la Fuente, Kaniehtiio Horn
Run-time/Episodes: 33 (3 Seasons)
IMDB Rating: 7.2/10 | Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 27%

One of the first major Netflix Original horror series, this is show was all about the secrets that lie in the small Pennsylvania town called Hemlock Grove.

You’d be correct in thinking this a werewolf show. Despite this vampires feature heavily in the show and we just can’t ignore that! The show was sadly canceled after 3 seasons but still has plenty of action, gore and a fantastic cast warranting your attention.

Interview with The Vampire

Director: Neil Jordan
Cast: Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Antonio Banderas, Stephen Rea, Kirsten Dunst, Christian Slater
Run-time/Episodes: 122 Minutes
IMDB Rating: 7.6/10 | Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 62%

Born as an 18th-century lord, Louis is now a bicentennial vampire, telling his story to an eager biographer. Eventually, gentle Louis resolves to leave his violent maker, but Lestat guilts him into staying by turning a young girl Claudia whose addition to the “family” breeds even more conflict.

Based on the novel of the same name “Interview with the Vampire” is an instant classic of the vampire genre. Don’t let the fact this film is a winner of a ‘Razzie Award’ deter you, the film is seductive and draws you into the narrative and keeps you engaged till the end.

Monster Family

Director: Holger Tappe
Cast: Emily Watson, Jason Isaacs, Nick Frost, Jessica Brown Findlay, Celia Imrie, Catherine Tate
Run-time/Episodes: 93 Minutes
IMDB Rating: 4.7/10 | Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 10%

While the movie hasn’t exactly reached the popularity of the likes of Hotel Transylvania it’s one of the few titles on this list you can sit down and enjoy with the kids.

Queen of the Damned

Director: Michael Rymer
Cast: Aaliyah, Stuart Townsend, Marguerite Moreau, Vincent Perez, Paul McGann
Run-time/Episodes: 101 Minutes

Follows the legendary vampire Lestat, who has reinvented himself as a rock star in the contemporary American music scene. His music wakes Akasha, the queen of all vampires, and inspires her desire to make Lestat her king. Akasha’s malevolent power is so great that all the immortal vampires must stand against her if they want to survive.

A sequel to Anne Rice’s novel “Interview with the Vampire” instead of Tom Cruise reprising his role of Lestat, Stuart Townsend played the role instead. The movie also paid homage to actress and singer Aaliyah who had sadly died 6 months before the film was released in cinemas.

Stakeland II: The Stakelander

Director: Dan Berck, Robert Olsen
Cast: Connor Paolo, Nick Damci, Laura Abramsen, A.C. Peterson, Steven Williams
Run-time/Episodes: 81 Minutes
IMDB Rating: 5.3/10 | Rotten Tomatoes Rating: N/A%

After his home of New Eden is destroyed by a cult of vampire worshippers, Martin is once again in the badlands of America. With nowhere else to go he attempts to find his mentor the legendary vampire killer ‘Mister’ to help take his revenge on the cult and the vampire that leads them.

The movie was released on digital platforms early 2017 after the film debuted at the Sitges film festival in 2016. The film took six years to come out after the original and writer Nick Damici still wishes for the movie to get another sequel and end with a trilogy. Unfortunately for him, MPI currently owns the property and will ultimately be up to them to greenlight another movie for the franchise.

The Originals (TV Series)

Director: Multiple
Cast: Joseph Morgan, Daniel Gillies, Charles Michael Davis, Phoebe Tonkin, Yusuf Gatewood, Danielle Campbell
Run-time/Episodes: 92 Episodes (5 Seasons)
IMDB Rating: 8.3/10 | Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 56%

Klaus, the original vampire/werewolf hybrid, returns to New Orleans – which his family helped build – to investigate rumors of a plot against him. He finds his former protege, Marcel, reigning powerful over its inhabitants, causing growing tension in the supernatural community. Klaus’ brother, Elijah, joins him, and they learn that werewolf Hayley has fallen into the hands of a defiant witch who has life-changing information. Klaus and Elijah plan to reclaim the city, and while waiting to see if their last remaining sibling, Rebekah, will leave Mystic Falls to join them, they form an alliance with the witches to help further their cause.

The spin-off to parent show The Vampire Diaries saw the Mikaelsons popularity skyrocket, and with it overtaking The Vampire Diaries, I think what helped was it’s more adult approach over the TVD’s teen horror-drama, to which I found it a lot more captivating to watch, there’s something about the aura and mystique of New Orleans folklore that is so appealing.

The Transfiguration

Director: Michael O’Shea
Cast: Eric Ruffin, Karin Cherches, Luis Scott, Dangelo Bonelli, Aaron Moten
Run-time/Episodes: 97 Minutes
IMDB Rating: 6.0/10 | Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 84%

Orphaned teenager Milo has an obsession with vampire lore, blurring the lines between fantasy and reality he murders strangers to drink their blood and steal their money.

The film blurs the line between what is fantasy and what is the reality. Is Milo just human or is he, in fact, a Vampire? The dark drama debuted at the 2016 Cannes film festival and was subsequently released in select UK cinemas on the 21st of April, 2017. Safe to say this little title will leave you feeling creeped out to no end.

The Vampire Diaries (TV Series)

Director: Multiple
Cast: Paul Wesley, Ian Somerhalder, Kat Graham, Candice King, Zach Roerig, Nina Dobrev
Run-time/Episodes: 171 Episodes (8 Seasons)
IMDB Rating: 7.7/10 | Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 69%

A few months after their parents are killed in a tragic car accident, Elena Gilbert and her brother, Jeremy, are trying to come to terms with their grief. For Elena, formerly popular and involved with the school and her friends, it’s a struggle to hide her sadness. She finds herself drawn to a handsome and mysterious new student, Stefan, unaware that he is a centuries-old vampire doing his best to live peacefully among humans. His brother, Damon, however, is the embodiment of vampire stereotypes, including violence and brutality, and the two brothers wage a war for the souls of Elena and everyone else in her small Virginia town.

The perfect show to binge if you’re struggling to watch something this Halloween, with 8 seasons and 171 episodes the series will definitely last you a while! The series was my guilty pleasure and I found myself hooked watching it and blitzed almost 4 seasons of the show in just under 2 weeks. The show is based on the novels of the same name by Author L.J Smith which were released all the way back in 1991.

The Vampire’s Assistant

Director: Paul Weitz
Cast: John C. Reily, Josh Hutcherson, Chris Massoglia, Jessica Carlson, Michael Cerveris
Run-time/Episodes: 109 Minutes
IMDB Rating: 5.9/10 | Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 37%

Best friends Darren and Stephen visit Cirque De Freak and encounter the Vampire Larten Crepsley. After Darren steals Crepsley’s pet Spider Madam Octa he is poisoned by her bite. in exchange for the antidote from Creplsey, Darren must become a half Vampire and become Crepsley’s assistant.

Based on the Cirque Du Freak novels by author Darren Shan, the movie loosely takes place over the events of the 1st to 3rd books out of the 12 novels in the ‘Darren Shan Saga’. The film was developed by Universal but after a poor reception from fans and critics, it is unlikely a sequel will be coming anytime soon.

Van Helsing (2004)

Director: Stephen Sommers

Run-time/Episodes: 131 Minutes

One year later the infamous monster hunter Van Helsing is sent on a mission by the Vatican to assist an ancient Romanian bloodline to kill Dracula so they may enter Heaven.

Stephen Sommers Van Helsing brings together some of the oldest and most well-known horror villains in cinema history. While it did receive negative reviews from critics the movie was still popular amongst movie goers and produced over $300 million at the box office.

Van Helsing (TV Series)

Director: Multiple
Cast: Kelly Overton, Jonathan Scarfe, Vincent Gale, Rukiya Bernard, Aleks Paunovic, Christopher Heyerdahl
Run-time/Episodes: 26 Episodes (2 Seasons)
IMDB Rating: 6.1/10 | Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 82%

Vanessa Helsing, a distant relative of famous vampire hunter Abraham Van Helsing, is resurrected only to find that vampires have taken over the world.

This will be a guilty pleasure for many, myself included. Of all the iterations of Van Helsing over the years, this one is by far the most unique. The series is incredibly brutal in parts and sometimes heart wrenching during other parts. So, if you’re looking for a fun and high octane Vampire show than Van Helsing is a great fit for you.
