New Releases on Netflix UK (7th October 2016)

It’s October and it’s time for another weekly rundown of What’s New on Netflix UK! There’s been a lot of new additions this week with it being the start of a new month so it’s hard to try and cover everything in one article. As such, here are my recommendations from this week’s additions and I’m sure some of you will disagree with my choices so please do let us know in the comments what your top picks are this week.

First up we have “The Siege of Jadotville”, the latest Netflix exclusive movie. Based on a true story from the Congo in the 1960s, the film follows Irish soldier at Quinlan. Quinlan is part of a U.N. peace-keeping mission and ends up leading his team in a tense standoff against French and Belgian mercenaries. What makes this film more tense, as well as the fact that it actually happened, is that the majority of his team had never been in battle before and were poorly equipped.

In 1977 James Earl Ray, Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassin, escaped from prison in Tennessee. He covered just 8 miles in the 55 hours before he was captured. Gary Cantrell decided that this wasn’t very good and that he could have covered 100 miles in that amount of time and then he invented a new endurance race named after his long-term running partner, Bill Barkley. “The Barkley Marathons: The Race That Eats Its Young” is a documentary about this ultramarathon where competitors can choose the ‘fun run’ of 60 miles or the full thing of 100 miles. They have just 60 hours to complete this mammoth task and only a handful make it through to the end.

If you like comedy/horror films then you could do worse than watch the 80’s cult film “Ghoulies”. A young couple move into an old mansion that was inherited from his satanist uncle. Upon throwing a party and getting a bit carried away, a bunch of troublesome demons are conjured up and they start to wreak havoc. It’s not great, but its a fun, silly movie that you might enjoy.

TV series have had a good update this week with a couple of great titles returning and some extra seasons added to others. The first 2 series of “Black Mirror” have returned ahead of the upcoming Netflix Original series 3 (due on October 21st). Note that “White CHristmas”, the Christmas special often referred to as series 3, is included as an episode of series 2 on Netflix.

“Fresh Meat” has made a welcome return as well as new series of: “Bad Education” (series 3 added), “The Big Bang Theory” (season 9 added), “Whitechapel” (series 4 added), “Still Game” (series 6 added), “Limmy’s Show!” (series 2 added) and “Burnistoun” (seasons 2 & 3).

Just in time for halloween the kids have been given “Casper’s Scare School ” and “Casper’s Haunted Christmas”. Everyone loves a friendly ghost!

There is also a short Lego film based, strangely, around hot dogs and dinosaurs… “LEGO Jurassic World: The Indominus Escape” is a typically off-beat Lego animation but a fun one for kids.
