With Ricky Gervais’s brand new comedy special now streaming on Netflix, we thought we’d take a retrospective look back at Gervais’s previous work on Netflix. The comedian and actor has been involved in more Netflix projects than you probably think and the majority of his back catalog is available too.

Ricky Gervais has also been the recipient of one of the biggest ever payday’s with his standup special that arrived on Netflix in March 2018.

Here’s a look at Ricky Gervais’s library streaming on Netflix.

BBC Series

The Office (UK) and Extras

The Office (UK) (left) and Extras (right)

In the early 2000’s Ricky could be found on the BBC in the United Kingdom producing sitcoms. The two biggest are The Office (UK) and Extras. The Office was the bigger hit out of the two and took place in a mundane workplace where Gervais played the boss, David Brent. He’d later go onto to reprise the role in Life on the Road movie as we’ll cover in a second. Extras was another series from Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant. In the series, Ricky played Andy Millman, an extra desperate to make it to the big time.

The Office (UK) is currently on Netflix in the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada and Australia. The US Office is also on Netflix and features two cameos by David Brent throughout.

Extras is only available on Netflix in the United Kingdom. It’s not streaming in the US because it’s an HBO title and as you may already know, it doesn’t allow its content on Netflix.

Netflix Originals

Ricky Gervais has been involved in several Netflix Original projects but the number will vary based on where you live and if you count Derek as a full Netflix Original.

The first Gervais Original is Derek. Originally the series aired on Channel 4 in the United Kingdom but Netflix soon picked up the rights to the series abroad for season 1. For season 2 and the extended final episode, it was a full fledge Netflix Original.

The series is done in the style of a mockumentary (much like The Office) and follows Derek, a lovable person who volunteers his time at a local care home. It’s a bizarre show that also features Karl Pilkington in the first season but still features some of the clever writing that made The Office a smash hit.

The Little Prince (Left) and Special Correspondents (Right)

In 2016, Gervais featured in two Netflix Original movies. These two titles are full-fledged Netflix Originals. The first was a voice part in the charming movie, The Little Prince. In the animated hit movie, Gervais plays ‘the conceited man’ and was among a star-studded lineup including Jeff Bridges, Mackenzie Foy, and Rachel McAdams.

Starring alongside Eric Bana, Special Correspondents came out later on Netflix in 2016. The movie currently isn’t held in high regard with the critics but the movie is still watchable and a must-watch if you’re a fan of Gervais. In the movie, two news reporters fake their own kidnapping to gain national coverage.

In 2017, Netflix picked up the 2016 movie David Brent: Life on the Road which saw Gervais reprise his role as David Brent for the final (?) time. Netflix eventually got the rights to show in the United Kingdom too in early 2018. Life on the Road was about David’s attempt at becoming the rock star he wanted to be. Many cringe moments ensued and is a must watch if you enjoyed The Office.

That leads us to March 2018 when Ricky Gervais returned to standup for the first time in years and delivered one of the best standup specials on Netflix in the form of Humanity.

Ricky also features as one of the guests of Jerry Seinfeld’s ‘Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee‘. He appears in season 1, episode 14.

Other Gervais Titles on Netflix

  • An Idiot Abroad, a show which documents Ricky torturing Karl Pilkington is available on Netflix in Europe and Japan.
  • Night at the Museum where Gervais plays the curator is on Netflix UK.
