April 2017 has significantly fewer movies coming to Netflix than normal, but there’s still plenty of variety in the form of new exclusive movies both from Netflix and Disney plus old classics too. For everything coming to Netflix in April 2017 check out our guide and while you’re at it, check out our top TV picks for April too.

Here are our top 5 movies coming to Netflix in April 2017:

5. Queen of Katwe (2017) Disney Early Release

Netflix Release Date: April 25th

Although we’re getting the rescheduled BFG title from Disney, Queen of Katwe is the only Disney exclusive movie coming this month, and the chances are you haven’t heard of it. The live action movie release last year tells the tale of a girl stricken by poverty who finds an escape by competing at a competitive level in chess. It’s an inspiring true tale brought beautifully to life by Disney and on Netflix exclusively!

4. The Secret Life of Pets (2016)

Netflix Release Date: April 22nd

Also getting an early debut on streaming services this month is the animated hit from 2016, The Secret Life of Pets. Featuring an all-star cast including the likes of Kevin Hart, Louis C.K., Jenny Slate and Lake Bell, this is a story about how one talking dog goes on an adventure all in the time when it’s owner isn’t keeping a watchful eye. It’s set in New York and is a wonderfully animated and often hilarious movie.

3. Cool Runnings (1993)

Netflix Release Date: April 1st

Disney is bringing one of its true classics to the service on the first of the month and comes at a great time too. The movie is about the Jamaican bobsled team who managed to qualify and compete in the Winter Olympics. It’s slightly dramatized but is based on a true story and at the time was a major feat. This month, the first ever African team managed to also qualify for the bobsled too meaning it’s a perfect time to revisit this 90’s classic.

2. Tropic Thunder (2008)

Netflix Release Date: April 1st

Tropic Thunder has grown to be one of my favorite comedy movies in the last ten years. You’re able to quote from literally every scene and has an incredible cast which creates a memorable comedy which isn’t something you hear of every day. It pits a bunch of movie actors filming a Vietnam war movie but mistakenly ends up getting into a real war with hilarious consequences. Tom Cruise particularly has a standout performance in this movie.

1. Sand Castle (2017)

Netflix Release Date: April 21st

Our number one movie comes in the form of a Netflix Original scheduled to release on April 21st. It’s a British war film which is set during 2003’s Iraq war so is relatively fresh for many people. It stars Nicholas Hoult (X-Men First Class, Skins, Mad Max) who plays Matt Ocre, a machine gunner who along with his platoon gets assigned to repair a broken water system. The trailer looks intense and we can’t wait to see how it comes out in the final picture.
