Let’s take a look at July’s offerings:

5. Out of Thin Air

Netflix Release Date: July 1st

Premiering at Toronto’s Hot Docs, this film chronicles Iceland’s most infamous murder case. In 1974, two unrelated men disappeared and their bodies were never found. The first, an 18-year-old man, vanished on a wintry night after attending a party. Months later, a 32-year-old father received a late-night phone call, drove to a café, parked his car and was never seen again. Suspicion fell on a group of “bad kids” who were subsequently convicted. All six who were jailed would appeal their cases for decades to come. I don’t want to give too much away, but it’s a twisty, convoluted tale that doesn’t become completely clear until the end. But it’s worth the haunting journey.

4. Bad Santa 2

Netflix Release Date: July 8th

Billy Bob Thornton returns to his role as the crudest Santa ever, Willie Soke. Fueled by cheap whiskey, greed and hatred, he teams up with his angry little sidekick, Marcus, to knock off a Chicago charity on Christmas Eve. A black comedy with a lot of raunch, they lower the bar on terrible behavior.

 3. To The Bone Netflix Original

Netflix Release Date: July 14th

Lily Collins stars in this Netflix drama about a young woman with anorexia whose family sends her to an nontraditional recovery program in a group home for young people. She expects the experience to mimic every other failed rehab attempt she had throughout her teenage years, but she is challenged and inspired by her fellow patients battling their demons, as well as the eccentric doctor treating them (Keanu Reeves). Collins herself has battled the eating disorder and she brings that experience to the screen.

2. The Incredible Jessica James Netflix Original

Netflix Release Date: July 28th

Acquired at Sundance, Jessica Williams (Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show”) stars as a young, aspiring playwright in New York City who’s recovering from a recent breakup. After a date with a divorcee named Boone (Chris O’Dowd) Williams learns how to navigate the “social media obsessed post-relationship universe.” Jessica Williams is commanding, her performance is invigorating, and the film is charming.

1. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Disney Exclusive Early Release

Netflix Release Date: July 18th

The first live-action Star Wars film to hit Netflix in the U.S. under the company’s exclusive deal with Disney, it is the first installment of the Star Wars Anthology series, set immediately before the events of the original Star Wars film. It follows a group of rebels on a mission to steal the plans for the Death Star, the Galactic Empire’s superweapon. With a great cast (including Alan Tudyk, Jiang Wen, Diego Luna, and Forest Whitaker), mesmerizing computer-generated imagery, and lots of action, it’s a winner.

Dates subject to change.
