Here’s our top 5 TV series picks coming to Netflix in April 2017.
5. Bill Nye Saves the World (Season 1) Netflix Original Series
Netflix Release Date: April 21st
Bill is back and has a new Netflix talk show, Bill Nye Saves the World. The series seeks to debunk anti-scientific claims and myths in topics ranging from sex to alternative medicine to climate change.
“It will take a ‘fact-based’ approach to informing its audience.” -Bill Nye
The show will feature celebrities, special correspondents, and comedians, as well as experiments. Even Tim Gunn (scree!) makes an appearance. It looks to be a lot of fun.
4. Girlboss (Season 1) Netflix Original Series
Netflix Release Date: April 21st
Produced by Charlize Theron (Mad Max: Fury Road), this TV adaptation of the worldwide bestselling book centers on Sophia (Robertson), a rebellious, broke anarchist who refuses to grow up. She stumbles upon a passion for selling vintage clothes and goes from eBay retailer to CEO. As she builds her fashion empire, she realizes the value and the difficulty of being the boss of her own life. It’s a chance for Netflix viewers to embrace a flawed woman in all her complexity. In the book, the character has some pretty unlikable moments. It will be interesting to see how she is portrayed.
3. MST 3000: The Return (Season 1) Netflix Original Series
Netflix Release Date: April 14th
Another blast from the past is returning and has found a home at Netflix: Mystery Science Theater. The original show began in 1988 and ran for a total of 10 seasons over 11 years, with a feature film in 1996. If you aren’t old enough to remember the cult hit, let me fill you in. They show most terrible movies they can find and pair it with running commentary, à la what you may know as RiffTrax. With stars like Patton Oswalt, Felicia Day, and Jonah Ray on board for the reboot, this is sure to be hate-watching at its finest.
2. Documentary Now! (Season 2)
Netflix Release Date: April 10th
It seems as if everyone is REALLY into documentaries all of a sudden. With that in mind, SNL alumni Fred Armisen, Bill Hader, Seth Meyers bring you this mockumentary series. Each episode parodies a well-known film, shot in a different style of documentary filmmaking and honors “some of the most important stories that didn’t actually happen.” You don’t need to have seen the original movie each is based on, but it certainly doesn’t hurt. You must at least watch the Grey Gardens episode. It’s spectacular.
1. Chelsea (Season 2) Netflix Original Series
First Episode Airs April 14th
Love it or hate it, Chelsea is back. This new season will bring a change in format, with hour-long weekly episodes. A new installment will appear on Friday nights and the show will run 30 weeks, just as the first season did. The first season was a little shaky, with a lot of changes throughout as they tried different things to see what worked. Here’s hoping for a great new season, steady on its feet and always funny.
