It’s the time of the month where we look at all the new TV series coming to Netflix in July and give you our top picks. For a full list of the new movies and new series coming in July, check out our preview.
5. The Originals: Season 4 The CW Exclusive Early Release
Netflix Release Date July 1st
A spinoff of The Vampire Diaries, The Originals follows vampire Klaus Mikaelson as he and his family become embroiled in the supernatural politics of New Orleans. The show has a huge following and is just the thing if you’re looking for a little paranormal activity in your life.
4. Last Chance U: Season 2 Netflix Original Docuseries
Netflix Release Date July 21st
This award winning, all-access show goes inside the lives of the football players of East Mississippi Community College—and their dorm rooms, academic meetings, backroom coach disputes, and even a massive brawl in season one. The college takes in former star recruits who’ve fallen out at bigger schools for one reason or another, then contends for JUCO titles and sends those star players back to bigger colleges. You’re really in the action and behind the scenes with the coaches, players, and staff as they open up, not just about sports but about their own personal lives. It’s compelling stuff.
3. The Standups: Season 1 Netflix Original Series
Netflix Release Date July 4th
Netflix is dominating when it comes to producing and distributing original comedy specials. They have been consistently delivering very high-quality hourlong specials from the best names in the business. Now they are giving us a new mini-series that features six 30-minute routines by well-known and up-and-coming performers like Nate Bargatze, Deon Cole, Fortune Feimster, Nikki Glaser, Dan Soder and Beth Stelling. It’s also being advertised by Netflix as the first batch, so I hope that means another round of fresh comedians, and soon.
2. Friends From College: Season 1 Netflix Original Series
Netflix Release Date July 14th
Netflix seems to know what they are doing when it comes to the funny, and now they have a new series from Nick Stoller (the man responsible for some of the best R-rated comedies of the past decade, including Forgetting Sarah Marshall). It’s about a group of friends that went to college together and the shenanigans that take place when everyone hasn’t quite grown up yet. The cast is a comedy dream, including Keegan-Michael Key, Fred Savage, Kate McKinnon, and Billy Eichner. I have high hopes for this one.
1. Ozark: Season 1 Netflix Original Series
Netflix Release Date July 21st
Jason Bateman stars as a clean-cut Chicagoan named Marty Byrde who finds himself in a bad situation when a drug lord for whom he’s been laundering money suspects that he and his business partner are skimming profits. Now he must wash $8 million or he and his whole family will be killed. Marty desperately relocates with his two kids and wife (Laura Linney) to the Lake of the Ozarks to start cleaning cash. As a big fan of Breaking Bad, I’m eager to see where this one goes. Dark. I hope it’s dark.
