Netflix has really gotten this series thing down. In the beginning, we all thought it would be a small addition to the collection of stuff the other guys were already making. But with each effort, they’re cornering unique ideas, big stars, and quality material.

The latest addition to their ever-growing library is a comedy about a group of women who are making a living by selling their bodies. Yes, it is an industry that is frowned upon. But it has been happening for centuries and will continue for more. Women willing to degrade themselves by doing unspeakable acts, all for money. I’m talking, of course, about female wrestling. What did you think I was talking about? Leg warmers are shocking, people.

What is it about?

For those of you that didn’t grow up in the late 80s and early 90s, wrestling was a big thing. Like, huge. It was on TV all the time, touring, pop stars got involved (I’m looking at you Cyndi Lauper), dolls, shirts, it was everywhere. This was wrestling’s heyday.

Now we have this frenzy for the world that is wrestling, but there seems to be one thing missing—boobs. In 1986  it was decided that women needed to be in on the action. G.L.O.W was formed. Also known as The Glorious Ladies of Wrestling, they had costumes, they had props, they were over-the-top.

This story focuses on Ruth Wilder (Alison Brie) an out-of-work, struggling actress in 1980s Los Angeles who resorts to the glitter and spandex out of desperation. It’s her last ditch effort at stardom.

Yes. Humans wore this in the 80s.

The Creators

The minds behind this have proven track records. Jenji Kohan, is creator and executive producer of hit Netflix series Orange is the New Black. GLOW was created by Liz Flahive (Homeland, Nurse Jackie) and Carly Mensch (Nurse Jackie, Orange Is The New Black). Orange Is the New Black creator Jenji Kohan and Tara Herrmann executive produce alongside Flahive and Mensch who are serving as showrunners.

The Cast

Alison Brie is in the starring role as Ruth Wilder. You may recognize her from Mad Men or Community, but she also currently voices Diane Nguyen on the Netflix animated series BoJack Horseman.

In addition to working with 12 Hollywood misfits, Ruth also has to compete with Debbie Eagan (Betty Gilpin) a former soap actress who left the business to have a baby, only to be sucked back into work when her picture perfect life is not what it seems.

Marc Maron is Sam Sylvia, a washed-up, B-movie director who now must lead this group of women on the journey to wrestling stardom.
