Netflix UK continue 2017 with yet more great additions – I thought that after last week’s additions that they’d be scraping the barrel for the rest of the month but I was wrong.

The big arrival this week, and one that’s been promoted for quite some time now, is “A Series of Unfortunate Events” based on the great books of the same name. The Baudelaire orphans lost their parents in a fire and regularly move around different carers. Their family have secrets though – very valuable secrets. The evil Count Olaf wants to get his hands on them and spends his time following the orphans in various different guises. It’s funny, it’s dark and it’s a little bit twisted. All 8 episodes of season 1 are available now.

“The Theory of Everything” has also been added and tells the story of Stephen Hawking. Even if you have no interest in relative physics, the film has a great story and some superb acting. It’s dramatic, it’s amusing, it’s an all-round enjoyable film.

For horror fans there’s the Iranian “Under the Shadow”. Set in war-torn Tehran in the 1980’s a woman becomes convinced that her house is possessed by evil spirits. This BAFTA-nominated film relies on the steady build up of suspense and comes highly recommended.

For the younger viewers we have “Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb” starring Ben Stiller as a museum guard who ends up in London. When an Egyptian pharaoh is resurrected by a magic tablet, he has to go on the hunt to get him back in time with the help of other museum pieces that also come to life. It’s a fun family film and also has a great cameo from Hugh Jackman.

And finally for this week is the addition of another kids’ series based on the hit toy: “We’re Lalaloopsy”. This fun series, based on the popular dolls, teaches youngsters about friendship, creativity and collaboration.
