Welcome back to What’s New on Netflix UK. First up this week, a very popular addition is “Kingsman: The Secret Service”, an action comedy with Samuel L Jackson. Eggsy is a teen who lives with his mum and abusive step-father. When he gets arrested, a mysterious person comes to his aid and persuades him to enrol as a ‘Kingsman’. Eggsy’s father, it transpires, was also a Kingsman who died trying to save the world. Eggsy, a streetwise teen, really isn’t your usual secret service agent but he undergoes the gruelling training in order save the world.
Teen sci-fi flick “Divergent” arrived this week. Set in the far future where people are grouped together by their virtues. Beatrice is classed as a divergent as she doesn’t fit into any one group of people and she soon learns that people are trying to kill off her and the other divergents. Using their unique skills Beatrice and her allies must look out for each other and try find out why they are seen as a threat as well as being wanted by the government.
Romance fans may enjoy “Fifty Shades of Grey” – the first in the “Fifty Shades” series (the 2nd, “Fifty Shades Darker”, was recently released in cinemas). When Anastasia interviews Christian Grey for a college magazine she quickly falls for him, and him for her. Upon getting to know him, Anastasia soon learns that he has some very specific tastes in the bedroom. While trying to learn exactly what gets Christian going, she manages to manipulate him into falling for her and breaks him out of his usual ways.
Some great Ken Burns documentaries have returned this week too and are well worth a watch if you’re interested in American history: “Ken Burns: Prohibition”, “Ken Burns: The Civil War”, “Ken Burns: The Roosevelts: An Intimate History” and “Ken Burns: The War”.
And finally for the families this week is “Annie” – the classic 1982 version. Based on the Broadway musical, the film tells the story of Annie, a young orphan in the 1930’s. After managing to be adopted from an not-so-great orphanage, the musical tale tells the story of her getting used to her new life.
