New Releases on Netflix UK (2nd December 2016)

Published on EST

As we arrive in December we have a real mixed-bag of new additions and so my recommendations this week are equally mixed! First up we have a couple of documentaries: “Searching for Augusta: The Forgotten Angel of Bastogne” and “For the Love of Spock”.

“Searching for Augusta: The Forgotten Angel of Bastogne” tries to uncover the details of a black nurse during World War 2. Having been mentioned in a small number of reports, the documentary team try and find out more information about her and the racism she faced when tending to wounded soldiers.

Leonard Nimoy’s son takes a look at his father’s role as Spock in the long-running Star Trek franchise in “For the Love of Spock”. Featuring interviews with cast and crew from numerous series and movies (including the more recent reboots) he uncovers why Spock has been such a fascinating character.

“Get on Up” is a great biopic telling the story of soul singer James Brown – with a rather funky soundtrack to boot. Tracing back to his humble beginnings we see Brown fighting racism to build his career and also helping many African-American communities along the way.

In TV we have seen the arrival of the 7th season of “The Vampire Diaries” which I know a lot of you have been waiting impatiently for!

“The Syndicate” is a BBC drama series focussed on five lowly supermarket workers from Leeds that win £18m in a lottery syndicate. How will their sudden fortune change their lives? Well – you’ll obviously have to watch to find out. Hopefully Netflix will add series 2 (based in a hospital in Bradford) and 3 (based in a care home in Scarborough) at some point.

And finally for this week we have “jPod”, a comedy series based on the novel of the same name. It’s set in the offices of a games development company but the emphasis is on the inter-office relationships, scheming and misadventures of its employees.
