New Releases on Netflix UK (3rd February 2017)

As we hit a new month (where is 2017 going?!) we’ve been inundated with yet more great additions to Netflix UK. There’s a lot I want to cover this week so I’ll stop the small talk and get cracking.

First up this week we have a new Netflix Original series: “Santa Clarita Diet”. This dark comedy series is based around a married couple, Sheila and Joel. Sheila dies but comes back with a hunger for fresh human flesh and blood. This does, however, cause some amusing difficulties with their job as real estate agents.

“Bitten” is a clever werewolf series revolving around Elena Michaels who, having fled the pack, is called back after a series of grisly murders. Her old ways are brought back as she tries to help her old pack.

The 7th and final series of “The Good Wife” also arrived this week. This popular courtroom drama follows Alicia, a clever attorney, as she returns to work after her politician husband is jailed. The final season brings the whole story line to a good close.

For movies added this week we have the so-bad-it’s-good “Sharknado: The 4th Awakens”, meaning the complete set of Sharknado films (so far) are now available on Netflix UK. Following on 5 years from where “Sharknado 3: Oh Hello No!” left off, we see a freak weather storm bring the feared Sharknados return – but this time in Las Vegas. Can Fin and co save the day yet again? If you’ve never seen this series of films I recommend them just for their pure, unadulterated silliness.

On a slightly more serious note we have the 2015 sci-fi film “Ex Machina”.  Caleb, a computer programmer, wins a week-long retreat at his company CEO’s hidden mountain laboratory. On arrival, he is tasked with testing some new artificial intelligence – one that happens to be in the form of a beautiful female body.

With the recent announcement for the name of Star Wars Episode 8 it is quite fitting that a Star Wars-themed documentary has arrived. “I Am Your Father” is an independent documentary about David Prowse, the English actor who played Darth Vader in the original trilogy. His face was never shown and his voice was never heard – this documentary aims to give him his moment of glory.

And, finally for this week, one for the younger viewers (although I personally love this film) – it’s Wes Anderson’s “Fantastic Mr. Fox”. With an all-star cast, this stop-motion film based on Roald Dahl’s famous story of the same name, is a delight to watch. It tells the story of Mr Fox and various other woodland animals who come under threat from the local farmers after Mr Fox steals a few too many chickens.
