We’ve settled into June now and this week, June 9th 2018, Netflix UK has welcomed a grand total of 23 new titles. This includes nine new movies, three new documentaries, 10 new TV series and one new stand-up special. This may not seem like many but we’re sure you will find something worth watching this week. We’re going to pick our three favourites out of the list and tell you a little bit about each of them.

Our first pick of the week is the Netflix Original documentary The Staircase. The author, Michael Peterson, found his wife dead at the bottom of a staircase. This documentary focuses on the key developments in the case and ultimately attempts to answer one key question: was it a crime? Imagine going through life with so many questions looming in your head about someone you love – it can’t be easy for anyone. Each episode holds mystery and darkness… so what would you do to prove your innocence?

Sexuality is a personal thing. It’s something that, I’m sure, many people question or think about as they are growing up. The new Netflix Original film Alex Strangelove (2018) follows one teenager and his story to self-discovery. At school, there are plenty of social pressures – one of which is losing his virginity. Lucky for him, he has a loving girlfriend who is ready to take the plunge. However, it’s when Alex meets Elliot that things change and he starts to question whether his girlfriend is the one for him. Your teenage years can be tough but sometimes you simply have to go with your heart and what feels right. Sometimes, just sometimes – things can change for the better, even if others get hurt in the process. Ultimately, being true to yourself and others wins over telling a lie.

Our final pick this week is the film Ali’s Wedding. Sometimes it feels necessary to tell a lie just to get yourself out of something. It’s only when things escalate further than you first expected that you can lose control. Love is a difficult thing, especially when Ali has to pick between the woman he loves and the woman he promised to marry. Life is hard – particularly when everyone expects you to be more than you feel you are. That’s why little white lies are sometimes necessary… but every lie has a way of coming out in the end. Will Ali succeed in living up to his Father’s expectations? Will he end up with the girl he loves?
