New week, new titles, almost a new month. While there are plenty of things to look forward to in May, Netflix has still given us some great streaming options for this weekend. Gather your binging supplies and settle in.

Dear White People (Season 1) Netflix Original

This show is a fresh look at life on a college campus. It has just the right amount of provocative sarcasm blended with a likable storyline, with each show focusing on a different character. A take-off of the audacious movie of the same name, it’s funny, thought provoking, and original. What this show definitely doesn’t do is take itself too seriously. And you shouldn’t either. It’s a timely, unique look at today and parallels just how offended we have become as a society, boldly protesting anything and everything. Did I mention that it’s narrated by Gus Fring? Get past the title and enjoy this sharp series.

 Queen of Katwe Disney Exclusive

Based on true events, this Disney movie tells the story of a young girl who lives in the slum of Katwe in Kampala, Uganda. Life is a daily struggle, but she discovers the game of chess and a possible way to improve her life. Starring Lupita Nyong’o and David Oyelowo, it’s inspirational and strikes a perfect balance of heartwarming without becoming too sugary. It’s an understated family movie that embraces possibility.

Casting JonBenet Netflix Original

This documentary is unlike any other I’ve seen. I believe we all know the history of what happened on that cold December morning 20 years ago. A child was murdered and the mysteries began piling up immediately. This film is not a whodunit. Rather, it takes members of the community and has them retell the story and the evidence involved in that dreadful event. At first it seems disconnected. It moves between interviews, casting readings, and recreations of events. But it slowly draws you in and you see how each piece of the story builds upon the next. We are never going to know what really happened in that house. But this takes a look at why we are so obsessed and how it may have come to be.

The Secret Life of Pets

This fast adventure is a hero’s journey. It depicts the saga of Max and Duke, who wind up in a truck bound for the pound. They encounter a rabbit who saves the day, but who may have some nefarious plans of his own. The film has an incredible voice cast (Louis C.K., Eric Stonestreet and Kevin Hart, to name a few), excellent animation, and entertains on enough levels to keep the grown-ups as entertained as the kids. It’s a funny family night choice.

Have a happy weekend and happy streaming! Have any other additions you think should be on the list? Let us know in the comments!
