David Lynch will be working with Netflix on a brand new TV series according to a production listing from ProductionWeekly. Details are scarce at the moment but here’s what we know so far.
David Lynch is a decorated writer, director, and producer known for his highly regarded selection of movies but perhaps best known for ABC’s Twin Peaks which ran in the 90s and has scored a revival in recent years.
In issue 1222 of ProductionWeekly, an untitled David Lynch project is listed that’s going under the working title of “Wisteria”. The name “Wisteria” is likely a reference to Wisteria Lane (famous from ABC’s series Desperate Housewives). Lynch loves powerful women and melodrama (Twin Peaks) in his projects, so it’s not a far-reach for him to be referencing Desperate Housewives. (h/t to Pavel Frolov for pointing this out).
Since the initial publishing, we’ve learned via another info drop that the Untitled David Lynch series is now being called Unrecorded Night. Also listed is a director of photography, Peter Deming. Deming is known for his work alongside Lynch on Twin Peaks, Mulholland Drive, Lost Highway, Hotel Room, and On the Air but has also worked on The New Mutants, The Good Lord Bird, and Oz the Great and Powerful.
The listing also states that production is due to begin in May 2021 and that it’ll be filming in The Calvert Studios. Lynch is listed as writer and director for the series with Sabrina S. Sutherland listed as a producer. Sutherland has worked on a number of projects including Twin Peaks: The Missing Pieces from 2014. Beyond that and Netflix’s involvement, much remains to be seen.
We technically aren’t the first to report on a new show from David Lynch heading to Netflix. Back in April 2020, Lynch spoke about the possibility in an interview with THR (which was picked up by Collider) that there were rumors surrounding him working on a Netflix show but confined them to just rumors.
When asked about a secret Netflix project, Lynch responded with the following:
“There’s all kinds of rumors. I’ve got a show called What Did Jack Do? on Netflix right now. It’s a great show about a monkey. It’s something you’ve got to see. And it will really help you in quarantine.”
As he alludes to, the famed creator has worked with Netflix in the past. Three years ago, Netflix released Lynch’s project What Did Jack Do? to the world. The strange 17-minute crime mystery drama as it’s dubbed featured a detective interrogating a monkey. The movie was not announced in advance and dropped on Netflix to rave reviews. Lynch also served as executive producer on the documentary, My Beautiful Broken Brain which was picked up as a Netflix Original.
Since the publishing of this article, we’ve also learned of a Reddit user who posted earlier in 2020 teasing a TV series from Lynch with some details that line up with the production listing detailed above (h/t Welcome to Twin Peaks for the heads up).
Mark Frost, co-creator of Twin Peaks, has said he has no involvement in any Netflix project.
That’s all we know for now and suffice to say that none of this has yet to be confirmed by Netflix themselves or David Lynch himself. We’ll keep you posted.
