The legendary Ghostbusters franchise is heading to Netflix with two brand-new animated projects: a feature movie and a series. Since the announcement of the Ghostbusters foray in 2022, things have gone pretty quiet, and updates have been scarce. Here’s everything we know so far as of 2026.

The announcement of Netflix’s Ghostbusters journey came during the streamer’s Geeked Week event in June 2022. It was green-lit in 2024, with Sony Pictures Animation confirming the news in a social media post saying, “There’s something strange in the neighborhood…  Our supernatural comedy series, based on Ghostbusters, is coming soon to Netflix.”

The upcoming series comes from Ghost Corps (the internal team at Sony Pictures that works on Ghostbusters projects). It is executive-produced by Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan, who co-wrote Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Reitman is notably the son of Ivan Reitman, who helmed the original 1984 Ghostbusters movie.

The duo gave an update on the project in October 2024, with Kenan telling The Direct

“And I’ve spoken recently about the fact that we are in very active development on our animated series that we’re producing with Netflix. That is something that I’m actively involved with, Jason on a day-to-day basis right now, we are really excited about the stories that are starting to be told there, and the way that it intersects with the Ghostbusters stories that you and I love is going to be thrilling for our audiences.”

It was subsequently confirmed that Elliott Kalan, best known for roles on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and Mystery Science Theater 3000, would also be working on the project as both writer and EP

Sony Pictures Animation is working on the series, and in September 2024, Ghostbusters News spotted an interview with the executive vice president of global consumer products and licensing at Sony Pictures Entertainment, Jamie Stevens. In that interview with License Global, it seemed confirmed that the new series would be targeting kids. Stevens said, “One of our most exciting ventures is our kids’ programming, punctuated by the upcoming second season return of the hit preschool series, ‘The Creature Cases,’ produced by Sony Pictures Television – Kids for Netflix, along with Season 2 of ‘Goosebumps’ on Disney+ and an upcoming ‘Ghostbusters’ animated series, which Sony Pictures Animation is producing for Netflix.”

Flying Bark Productions is working on the new series alongside Sony Pictures Animation. The animation studio took to social media to confirm their involvement on April 14th. The Australian-based studio (which also has offices in Spain) has previously worked on Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie, Glitch Techs, and What If… They’ve also worked on the upcoming Stranger Things prequel spinoff Tales From ’85.

There’s both a Ghostbusters TV Series & Movie in the works at Netflix

In 2026, fans will have more clarity over what the Ghostbusters projects will be. The latest update comes from industry insider Jeff Sneider, who confirmed that Sony Pictures and Netflix have two separate projects in development. “There are two Ghostbusters projects in the works right now,” Sneider told John Rocha’s The Hot Mic podcast. “There’s a movie, an animated movie. And an animated series. Both at Netflix.”

Netflix has not yet green-lit an animated Ghostbusters movie. A report from Deadline in December 2024 had Kris Pearn (The Willoughbys) attached as a director. The report from Sneider has revealed further details, including that the title will be Ecto and that it will follow an unorthodox plot, told from the ghost’s unique perspective rather than those fighting them. It’s also worth noting that Ecto could end up being a working title, although it certainly works as a final title.

In addition, Sam Jarvis (Dollface) is writing the Ecto screenplay. There is still no release date set for the movie. Perhaps Netflix will make official announcements during its annual Geeked Week showcase later this year.

As for the TV series, we also have a few more details from Jeff Sneider’s report. It will take place in a key part of the Ghostbusters timeline. “The TV show is supposedly set in the 90s, during Walter Peck’s initial run for mayor,” Sneider said. This part of the timeline remains relatively unexplored and would help fill a void between the original Ghostbusters movies and the franchise’s requisite revival, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, in 2021.
