Netflix has given a swift green light to a third season of Old Dog, New Tricks (known locally as Animal), the hit Spanish comedy series starring Luis Zahera and Lucía Caraballo, just as season 2 goes into production. Here’s everything we know so far about the upcoming second season.

If you haven’t checked out the first season yet, the series dropped globally on Netflix on October 3, 2025. Created by Víctor García León, the comedy follows Antón, a gruff rural veterinarian from the fictional Galician village of Topomorto. After losing his traditional clientele, he is begrudgingly forced to join a modern animal boutique managed by his younger niece, Uxía.

While we haven’t covered its season 2 renewal yet, the show was a quick success for the streamer, earning a speedy renewal just 18 days after its premiere. Netflix Spain officially announced the second season on October 21, 2025, but news of a third season today is new.

The show featured in the global top 10s for three weeks, picking up 40.6M hours watched, with that equating to 9.7M views. It also entered the daily charts in 52 countries, impressive for a comedy series, with Spain naturally performing best, where it featured for 48 days. An easy renewal decision. Other regions where it performed best include Uruguay and Argentina where it featured in the daily top 10s for over 30 days.

The series comes from Alea Media, the audiovisual powerhouse founded by Aitor Gabilondo. If you’re an avid watcher of Spanish content on Netflix, Alea Media is no stranger to you. They are the team behind some of Netflix’s biggest Spanish-language hits, including Wrong Side of the Tracks (Entrevías), Unauthorized Living (Vivir sin permiso), Mute (El silencio), and the recent global smash hit Salvador.

Aitor Gabilondo and Jota Aceytuno will both return as executive producers for season 2.

What to expect from Season 2 of Old Dog, New Tricks

With Antón and Uxía’s dynamic firmly established in the first season, the second season promises to up the ante with new business ventures and a mystery brewing in Topomorto.

Here is the official synopsis for Season 2 (translated to English):

“The new Kawanda Urban pet shop in Santiago de Compostela brings joy back to Antón. But his stability is threatened when his niece Uxía, a recent graduate in ethology, joins the business. Together, with the help of Mike, Kawanda’s new manager, they launch a popular pet burial service that brings prosperity to Topomorto. However, the unexpected economic boom soon reveals a dark secret lurking beneath the surface.”

Víctor García León returns to write the new season alongside Teresa Bellón and César F. Calvillo. Directing duties for the new batch of episodes will be handled by Laura M. Campos and Manu Gómez.

In terms of the cast, we can confirm the following stars will be appearing in season 2:

  • Luis Zahera (Wrong Side of the Tracks) as Antón
  • Lucía Caraballo (No me gusta conducir) as Uxía
  • Carmen Ruiz (Women on the Brink) as Sabela
  • Adrián Viador
  • Raquel Nogueira
  • Lucía Veiga
  • Pepón Suevos

The big new addition, confirmed in a press release this morning, is Álvaro Mel (A Perfect Story).

Season 1 was notably praised for its authentic Galician flavor. Caraballo, who is originally from Madrid, worked closely with actor Federico Pérez Rey to perfect her Galician-inflected accent out of respect for the region. We expect production for season 2 to return to the beautiful region of Galicia, with season 1 having utilized stunning locations like Pontemaceira, Teo, Vedra, and Santiago de Compostela.
