Suppose you’re a fan of medical dramas. In that case, Netflix is about to add the first and only season of This Is Going to Hurt, which aired on the BBC in the United Kingdom and later was added to AMC in the United States, and come November 19th, you’ll be able to enjoy it via Netflix.
Based on Adam Kay’s real diaries from his time working in obstetrics and gynecology. The show follows Adam as he tries to juggle an increasingly strained personal life with the brutal demands of being a junior doctor: ninety-seven-hour workweeks, high-stakes decisions, and pay that barely covers the hospital parking meter.
The series paints a raw and often darkly funny portrait of the NHS (National Health Service) frontline. Like the book, it moves between the chaotic energy of the ward and the quiet exhaustion that follows, celebrating the small triumphs while not shying away from the heartbreak. It’s a story about trying to do your best in a system that doesn’t always make that easy, and about the everyday heroes who keep hospitals going.
Ben Whishaw leads the cast of the medical drama, which most Netflix watchers will know for his similarly excellent performance in Black Doves, where he appears alongside Kiera Knightley.
If you’re coming here after binging through all episodes and hoping for This is Going to Hurt season 2, we’ve got some bad news. According to the creator, via TVZoneUK, the series was always envisioned as being a single limited series. Kay is on the record saying, “I wrote it as a one-and-done, a beginning and a middle and an end, and I wrote it with that as a hard ending. I didn’t want to do a second series just for the sake of it…”
This is the latest AMC show to hit Netflix in the United States, with October and November being busy months for new arrivals. NOS4A2 and Parish were among the October additions, and Orphan Black: Echoes is scheduled to drop later in November, with Soulmates having just recently touched down. A new season of Mayfair Witches is also just around the corner.
Don’t expect This Is Going to Hurt to stay on Netflix for long; most of the AMC shows added are licensed for only a single year, so expect the series to depart sometime in November 2026.
