Has there ever been a piece of media scrutinized as thoroughly as the brand-new Stranger Things season 5 trailer? Maybe the GTA 6 trailers? Apart from that, nothing immediately comes to mind, not in recent memory anyway. The new trailer is packed with brand-new footage from what Ross Duffer says is predominantly the first volume of episodes (episodes 1-4). Now, a day later, what have we learned from the teaser, and what have fans dissected? Let’s dive in.
Running at 2 minutes and 46 seconds (slightly longer than what some of the leaks suggested), it’s clear that from the first frames, the tone is darker than ever. The camera lingers on haunting shots of desolate Hawkins streets, eerie music plays in the background, and Vecna’s voice echoes, reminding us he’s not done yet. Beyond that, Hawkins is at war.
As you know, Season 5 picks up after the events of the Season 4 finale, with the Upside Down now fully bleeding into Hawkins. The military appears to have taken control of the town, but it’s clear they’re no match for Vecna. The trailer sets up a full-scale war, with the voiceover teasing heavy losses, and this final season won’t have a happy ending for everyone.
Key Character Moments in Stranger Things Season 5 Teaser
Here’s what the teaser shows for the main characters:
- Will Byers – Will’s connection to Vecna continues to play a central role. He’s shown sensing Vecna’s presence again with the classic goosebumps on the back of the neck, collapsing from exhaustion, and possibly engaging in a telepathic battle. Evidence continues to point to Will being the key to defeating Vecna, but at what cost?
- Eleven – Eleven is seen levitating (flying?) on the junkyard bus from Season 1, a clear callback to where her story began. She also re-enters the Void, likely to confront Vecna directly. We see another shot of Eleven in what’s expected to be that bus again in the Upside Down, blindfolded and with a walkie-talkie – who is she contacting?

- Nancy Wheeler – Perhaps the most notable appearance is when she’s shown crying while washing blood off her hands. This raises questions—did she kill someone, or did a major character die in her arms? Speculation includes Karen or Ted Wheeler (Nancy’s mom), Jonathan, or Steve.
- Max Mayfield –Max is still shown in a coma after the events of Season 4, with Lucas sitting by her side, holding her hand and crying. Later, there’s a tense shot where Lucas is carrying an unconscious Max as Demodogs approach. It’s been speculated that Demodogs may have breached the hospital, forcing Lucas to move her to safety. While she remains inactive in the teaser, her fate clearly looms as one of the season’s biggest questions.
- Dustin Henderson – Possibly one of the earlier moments in the series, we see Dustin visit Eddie Munson’s (who is still not officially ruled out of appearing this season) grave, clearly still affected by his friend’s death. Theories suggest he may also face losing Steve. You may recall in a prior season, Dustin said, “
- Steve Harrington – Shown as a key player in the group’s mission against Vecna. He starts off in the WSQK radio van, adjusting a satellite and monitoring a decibel meter before driving away with Lucas and Mike following on bikes. Later, he’s seen driving his car with Dustin, Nancy, and Jonathan, possibly heading toward the Upside Down, and even rams through a fence while transporting vital equipment. Steve shares an emotional moment comforting a crying Dustin in Hawkins Lab, hinting at possible tragedy. He joins the OG group for a “hands-in” team moment before their final mission and upgrades his iconic nail bat to a chainsaw for the fight.
- Dr. K – Linda Hamilton debuts as Dr. K, who appears to be a new villain. She’s seen with military forces and children in an underground bunker. Some fan theories suggest the government is trying to replicate Eleven’s powers.
- Vecna – While his presence looms over the entire teaser, he’s actually not seen until the very end. The final “money shot” has Vecna walking through a gate in downtown Hawkins, surrounded by fire, and he chillingly says, “Found you,” signaling he’s actively hunting the group

Key Locations in Season 5 Teaser
Given that the trailer primarily features clips from early in the season (i.e., Volume 1), there isn’t much we can infer about the overall arc of the season. Still, this teaser gives us some excellent ideas on where we’re heading.
WSQK Radio Station. We’ve known from leaks and numerous set reports from the likes of Stranger Things Spoilers that the radio tower was a significant filming location throughout the year-long production window for Season 5. This teaser trailer gives us even more reason to believe it’ll play a vital role throughout season 5, as that’s where the teaser trailer opens. Given the location, it’s theorized that sound might be the best way of defeating or trapping Vecna this season. Later in the trailer, we can see the radio tower being circled by what appears to be the Mind Flayer.
Turnbow. In the trailer, at around the 1:58 mark, a sign is seen blown up. That sign appears to be an advertisement for Turnbow Land Development & Realty, as shown on a billboard in a behind-the-scenes Instagram post by series co-creator Ross Duffer back in March 2024. There’s another Turnbow in season 5, with Jake Connelly cast as Derek Turnbow. Not much is known about his character as of yet.

The Wheeler Residence? As alluded to above, Nancy can be found with blood on her hands (some even speculate her shoes were spotted with blood earlier, too), and we also see Karen and Holly hiding in a bathtub. Does that imply that Vecna has come to the Wheeler residence? Some have speculated that it may be Ted who perished.
Elsewhere, Downtown Hawkins has become a militarized zone, with barricades, helicopters, and soldiers stationed near the Hawkins Library, now the epicenter of the massive rift left by Vecna in Season 4. The military base also plays a major role, with Hopper and Eleven seen taking cover from gunfire and soldiers battling Demogorgons as red warning lights flash.
Other returning locations we spotted in the trailer include Hopper’s cabin, newly renovated, which serves as both a safe house for the Byers and a makeshift sensory deprivation setup for Eleven, while the iconic junkyard from Seasons 1 and 2 appears again as a training spot for her powers. We also see shots of The Upside Down and the old Creel House, the Hawkins Lab mirrored in the Upside Down. We also revisit familiar streets like Melvald’s General Store and Bradley’s Big Buy. It’s also speculated that some of the shots in the teaser come from the Hawkins Tunnel Network.
Anything Else and Pop Culture References…
Another character that has yet to be officially confirmed as returning is Vickie, but some fans believe that we may have just gotten a first glimpse of her in the teaser. For those unfamiliar, Vickie was Robin’s love interest from Stranger Things 4. Although her face wasn’t shown, some fans have captured a screenshot of someone in a uniform with red and white stripes, whom they believe is Vickie. She’s turned away from the camera.

- One of the biggest references is a throwback to the classic Steven Spielberg movie Jurassic Park, with Lucas and Max hiding behind a table, reminiscent of the scene in the first movie where they’re being hunted through the facility by a velociraptor. Of course, the difference here is that they’re being hunted down by Demodog(s)!
- The song heard throughout the trailer is a new edit of Deep Purple’s Child in Time. Some have noticed how the lyrics allude to what’s coming up in season 5. The band will certainly be hoping that the song gets a massive boost like season 4 did for Metallica’s Master Of Puppets and Kate Bush’s Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God).
The main trailer on YouTube has so far garnered over 10 million views, with some of the other language/country variations reaching around a million views. On TikTok the trailer is at
Honestly, there’s so much more to dissect from the teaser trailer than what we’ve done here. Best of all, while it’s beefy and has a ton of new footage, interpreting that footage into actual storylines is pretty difficult, which is the definition of a perfect teaser. Kudos to the team!
