Netflix is teaming up with the BBC and Canada’s CBC for a brand-new young adult comedy series called Camped Out. Hailing from Schitt’s Creek producer Matt Kippen, the series is officially in production. Here’s a rundown of everything we know so far about Camped Out following its announcement earlier this month by the Canadian broadcaster.
Created and showrun by Matt Kippen (Kim’s Convenience, Schitt’s Creek), Camped Out promises to bring plenty of laughs to the YA space. The series is being produced by Blue Ant Studios (Crew Girl, Davey and Jonesie’s Locker) with Matthew Hornburg, Mark J.W. Bishop, Donna Luke, Diane Rankin, and AJ Trauth serving as executive producers.
Interestingly, Netflix does seem to be working on these types of co-productions more and more for series aimed at younger audiences. It has done so with the likes of A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder, Geek Girl, North of North, and, for a time, Finding Her Edge.
Allison Johnston (Children Ruin Everything, Davey and Jonesie’s Locker) is attached to direct.
Here is everything we know so far about Camped Out:
What is the plot of Camped Out?
If you were a fan of the chaotic summer camp vibes of Wet Hot American Summer, this sounds right up your alley.
Here is the official synopsis provided for the new series:
“Three teenage slackers escape repeating a year of high school by agreeing to work at their guidance counsellors’ financially strapped summer camp, where they provide the young campers with bad advice, terrible survival skills, and abysmal role models. These “counsellors” focus less on the kids and more on their own attempts to make the summer not suck, avoid work, and wreak havoc on the luxury yacht club across the lake.”
Who is in the cast of Camped Out?
So far, only the three lead “slackers” have been announced for the series.
- Oscar Chark (Allegiance, Tracker)
- Yuvraj Kalsi (Allegiance, Alert: Missing Persons Unit)
- Evan Mok (Small Achievable Goals, Slo Pitch)
We expect to hear more casting news—including who will be playing the poor, financially strapped guidance counsellor—as production continues.
Who is writing the series?
Showrunner Matt Kippen has assembled a stellar writers’ room full of Canadian comedy veterans to pen the series. The writing team includes:
- Anita Kapila (Kim’s Convenience, Sullivan’s Crossing)
- Kathleen Phillips (Children Ruin Everything, Workin’ Moms)
- Kayla Lorette (Wayward, Doomlands)
- Josh Saltzman (Moonshine, Call Me Fitz)
- Maryan Haye (The Way Home, Popularity Papers)
What is the production status of Camped Out?
Official Production Status: Filming (Last Updated: July 2026)
Production is officially underway in Ontario, Canada! Netflix Canada confirmed the start of filming via Instagram in mid-July 2026 and is expected to continue, we’re told, through late Q3 2026.
While exact filming locations within the province haven’t been disclosed just yet, Camped Out joins a massive roster of Netflix productions that have recently set up shop in Ontario, including the Sam Worthington thriller I Will Find You, the upcoming thriller Wayward, and the massive YA hit Ginny & Georgia.
Where will Camped Out stream?
Because this is an international co-production, distribution will be split.
Camped Out will stream globally on Netflix. However, in Canada, the series will be available on CBC platforms. Given the BBC’s involvement in the production, it is highly likely that the series will air on the BBC / BBC iPlayer in the United Kingdom rather than Netflix. Netflix tends to get the release later than its other platforms and typically does license the show in the other countries at a later date.
When is the Camped Out Netflix release date?
Netflix has not yet announced an official release date for Camped Out.
Given that cameras only just started rolling in July 2026, the series will be deep in production throughout the summer. Assuming a standard post-production timeline for a half-hour comedy series, we are currently estimating a mid-to-late 2027 release date for Netflix globally.
We’ll keep you updated as soon as we hear more.
