Netflix is dipping its toes back into the world of K-Pop with a new acquisition. The Canadian teen musical drama Gangnam Project (also known as Gangnam Project: A K-pop Story) has been picked up for streaming and is scheduled to debut on the platform later this month.

Originally produced for CBC Gem in Canada and CBBC in the UK, the series fits perfectly alongside Netflix’s existing YA content, such as XO, Kitty, and the upcoming ice-skating show Finding Her Edge. Of course, Netflix has also been cashing in big time on the KPop trends, not least with its biggest movie of all time, KPOP Demon Hunters.

While the show has been airing in its home territories since 2024, with the second season having aired in early 2025, it will now reach a wider audience via Netflix. It’s currently unclear whether the series will return for a third season.

We can confirm that Season 1 of Gangnam Project will be available on Netflix (in the US) starting Friday, January 30th, 2026. It’s unclear whether season 2 will be part of the addition.

What is Gangnam Project about?

The series is a coming-of-age dramedy mixed with high-energy musical numbers. It centers on Hannah Shin, a biracial (Korean-Canadian) teenager who has always felt disconnected from her Korean heritage. It comes from creator Sarah Haasz, who served as co-showrunner alongside Romeo Candido. Justin Wu, who has previously worked on Kim’s Convenience and Run the Burbs, is among the directors on the project.

Hannah travels to South Korea expecting to work as an English tutor at an elite K-pop entertainment company. However, through a series of mix-ups and hidden talents, she ends up as a trainee herself, navigating the grueling, glitzy, and cutthroat world of the K-pop industry.

The official synopsis reads:

“Hannah Shin (Julia Kim Caldwell) is a spirited teenager with a secret dream of becoming a star. When she travels to Korea to connect with her roots, she stumbles into the world of OME—a top K-pop training academy. Now, she must juggle her new life as a trainee, the pressure of debut, and the search for her own identity.”

Who is in the cast?

The series stars Julia Kim Caldwell in the lead role of Hannah. The cast features a mix of Canadian and international talent, including:

  • Brianna Kim as Chan-Mi, the fiercely competitive top trainee.
  • Taran Kim as Leo, Hannah’s brother.
  • Sean Baek (Killjoys) as Ken Yoon, the head of OME.
  • Zeboria Peters as Rook.
  • Angela Son as Sun-Hee.
