Netflix is continuing its trend of giving beloved teen dramas from the 2010s a new lease of life. Adding to January’s already stacked licensing library lineup is the cult-classic mystery series The Lying Game, which is set to drop on the streamer in late January.
Originally airing on ABC Family (now Freeform) from 2011 to 2013, the series was produced by the same team behind Pretty Little Liars. While it didn’t run as long as its Rosewood counterpart, it developed a fierce cult following that has been clamoring for a streaming home for years.
While this is an exciting addition, new viewers should be warned: the series was cancelled after two seasons. Like many shows of that era, it ended on a significant cliffhanger that was never resolved on screen.
Although airing on ABC Family, the series is actually produced by Pratt Enterprises, with Warner Bros. as the distributor under its Warner Horizon Television label.
We can confirm that both seasons of The Lying Game will be available on Netflix US starting Thursday, January 22nd, 2026.
What is The Lying Game about?
Based on the book series by Sara Shepard (who also wrote Pretty Little Liars), the show follows Emma, a kind-hearted foster kid who finds out she has a wealthy identical twin sister named Sutton.
Sutton, unlike Emma, was adopted by wealthy parents and lives a charmed life in Phoenix. When Sutton asks Emma to step into her life for a few days while she chases a lead on their birth mother, Emma agrees. But when Sutton goes missing, Emma is forced to keep up the charade, navigating a web of secrets, lies, and danger while pretending to be her sister.
The official synopsis reads:
“The Lying Game follows long-lost twins Emma and Sutton. Separated at birth and living very different lives, they reunite and agree to switch places. But when Sutton disappears, Emma must decide whether to come clean or keep playing the game to find out what happened to her sister.”
Who is in the cast?
The series is anchored by Alexandra Chando (As the World Turns), who pulls double duty playing both Emma and Sutton. Her performance was widely praised for creating two distinct personalities that viewers could easily tell apart.
The cast also includes:
- Blair Redford (The Gifted) as Ethan Whitehorse, the bad boy with a heart of gold.
- Allie Gonino as Laurel Mercer, Sutton’s adoptive sister.
- Alice Greczyn as Mads Rybak.
- Helen Slater (Supergirl) as Kristin Mercer.
- Adrian Pasdar (Heroes) as Alec Rybak.
