If heights make your palms sweat, you might want to brace yourself. The thrilling sports documentary Girl Climber is officially making its SVOD debut, arriving on Netflix in the United States on September 16th, 2026.
Following its initial release earlier this year and a recent VOD run via platforms like Jolt Film, the documentary is now scaling its way to a major subscription streaming service.
It joins an increasingly jam-packed September 2026 roster of third-party theatrical and VOD movies making their streaming debuts on Netflix US. Other notable SVOD premieres slated for next month include the award-winning Iraqi drama The President’s Cake (arriving September 3rd), the Bleecker Street camp disaster spoof Stop! That! Train! (arriving September 20th), and the British cyber-heist thriller LifeHack (arriving September 23rd). That’s in addition to the other major SVOD doc premiere in Folktales.
Here is everything you need to know about Girl Climber before it drops on Netflix next month.
What is Girl Climber about?
Produced by Red Bull Studios and directed by Jon Glassberg, this 1-hour-and-23-minute documentary is an absolute must-watch for extreme sports enthusiasts.
The film follows professional free climber Emily Harrington as she attempts a historic, record-breaking climb of the iconic El Capitan in Yosemite National Park. Chronicling her grueling preparation, mental fortitude, and the sheer physical toll of the ascent, the documentary offers a breathtaking look at one of the world’s most daunting rock formations. Impressively, the film’s cinematography was handled by none other than legendary free soloist Alex Honnold (yes, who did Netflix’s live climb in Taipei), ensuring that the camera work is just as vertigo-inducing and authentic as the climb itself.
Who is featured in Girl Climber?
Alongside Emily Harrington, the documentary acts as a who’s-who of the professional rock climbing world. Through interviews and climbing footage, viewers will see an all-star lineup of climbing legends, mountain athletes, and Harrington’s closest supporters.
The cast of featured individuals includes:
- Emily Harrington
- Alex Honnold (who also serves as Director of Photography)
- Adrian Ballinger (Emily’s partner)
- Lynn Hill
- Conrad Anker
- Tommy Caldwell
- Hilaree Nelson
- Cedar Wright
- Brad Gobright
- Sanni McCandless (Alex’s partner)
- Tim and Julie Harrington (Emily’s parents)
Jolt Film is behind the distribution of the film in collaboration with Red Bull Studios, Louder than Eleven, and Tyler Young Films.
As with most licensed third-party pickups, it is worth noting that this September 16th release date currently only applies to Netflix in the United States. For more on what’s coming up on Netflix in the United States throughout September 2026, keep it locked here on What’s on Netflix.
