Following up on the massive success of the first two films, Netflix’s hit action franchise Extraction is officially moving forward with its highly anticipated third installment. Thanks to a new report from Deadline, we now have confirmation on key returning cast members and exciting new details about the creative team.
Chris Hemsworth has officially closed his deal to reprise the role of unstoppable mercenary Tyler Rake. Joining him are Idris Elba and Golshifteh Farahani.
Farahani has been a core part of the franchise from the very beginning. She plays Nik Khan, Tyler Rake’s trusted handler, mercenary partner, and closest ally. She appeared in the first Extraction in 2020, pulling the strings from the control room before jumping into the final firefight, and her role was massively expanded in Extraction 2 (2023), where she fought side-by-side with Rake for most of the movie.
Elba is a more recent addition, but played a pivotal role in setting up this third movie. He made a surprise cameo in Extraction 2 as a mysterious operative known only as Alcott (or “The Man in the Suit”). He is the one who approaches a recovering Tyler Rake at the beginning of the second film to give him his mission, and he returns at the very end of the movie to spring Rake and Nik from prison—in exchange for them doing a job for his enigmatic boss. Elba is currently towards the end of filming on the second Luther movie for Netflix, in addition to producing a new documentary due out later this year with King Charles.
Behind the camera, stuntman-turned-director Sam Hargrave is locked in to direct his third Extraction film. However, there is a notable shakeup in the writer’s room: David Weil (Hunters, Citadel) is penning the script for the third movie. The previous two installments were written by Joe Russo.
Plot details are currently being kept under tight wraps, but fans can expect another massive, globe-trotting spectacle.
Production Begins This Summer
As now confirmed, the sequel is eyeing a summer production start, which aligns perfectly with our earlier reporting this year. We previously broke the news that Extraction 3 was gearing up for a 2026 shoot with filming expected to take place across Australia and Europe. Our understanding is that cameras are due to roll from June 1st and run through October 9th, 2026. Sydney, Australia is being eyed for the bulk of the shoot.
Hemsworth’s schedule has been a balancing act, but the summer start allows him to finish up his upcoming project Kockroach (which shoots this month) before jumping back into Rake’s tactical gear.
The Russo Brothers (Anthony and Joe), alongside Angela Russo-Otstot, Michael Disco, and Ari Costa, will continue to produce through their AGBO banner. Hemsworth and Benjamin Grayson are also producing for Wild State.
Expanding the Extraction Universe
The Extraction franchise remains one of Netflix’s crown jewels, with both previous films landing spots on Netflix’s Most Popular English Films list. The success of the mainline movies has sparked serious internal discussions about expanding the universe. As we recently reported, Netflix and AGBO have been aggressively expanding with multiple spin-offs and series set within the Extraction world, meaning Rake’s upcoming mission might just be a launching pad for an even larger cinematic universe. Both spin-offs, Mercenary: An Extraction Series and Tygo, wrapped production in the last month.
We’ll be keeping a close eye on casting news as we approach the summer production window. In the meantime, for a complete breakdown of what to expect, who is returning, and ongoing production updates, bookmark our comprehensive Extraction 3 preview guide here.
