As we covered yesterday, Netflix is expanding the Grand Line with a brand new LEGO One Piece animated special featuring the return of the live-action cast. Today, the streamer has dropped the official teaser trailer, key art, and a massive update on the voice cast that includes some serious fan favorites.
Yesterday, we brought you the exciting news that the core live-action Straw Hat crew would be jumping into the voice booth to play their blocky, minifigure counterparts. But it turns out Netflix was holding back a few extra surprises.
Alongside the release of the first official teaser trailer, Netflix has confirmed that Jeff Ward is officially returning to voice Buggy the Clown! Joining him are some highly anticipated Season 2 newcomers: Katey Sagal as Dr. Kureha and Callum Kerr as Captain Smoker.
Additionally, the new press release confirms that Charithra Chandran will be voicing both Miss Wednesday and her true royal moniker, Nefertari Vivi.
Here is the complete, updated voice cast for the two-part special:
- Iñaki Godoy as Monkey D. Luffy
- Emily Rudd as Nami
- Mackenyu as Roronoa Zoro
- Jacob Romero as Usopp
- Taz Skylar as Sanji
- Charithra Chandran as Miss Wednesday and Nefertari Vivi
- Mikaela Hoover as Tony Tony Chopper
- Katey Sagal as Dr. Kureha
- Jeff Ward as Buggy the Clown
- Callum Kerr as Captain Smoker
First Look at the ‘LEGO One Piece’ Trailer
Alongside the expanded cast list, Netflix dropped a vibrant new teaser trailer that perfectly captures the hilarious, unhinged tone of the LEGO specials.
The framing device is designed for newcomers while serving as a recap for the series thus far for superfans. According to Netflix’s official synopsis, the two-part animated event follows Usopp—the Straw Hat’s most reliably unreliable narrator—as he regales Chopper with the crew’s escapades across the East Blue and into the Grand Line, set just prior to Chopper joining the crew in Drum Island.
As you can see in the trailer, Usopp’s version of events is a little different from reality. He envisions himself as the absolute hero of the crew, single-handedly taking down Arlong and Alvida, and claiming he was the one who came up with the idea to search for the One Piece in the first place.
It’s a fantastic, non-canon way to recap the events of Season 1 while letting the cast flex their comedic chops. We even get a glimpse of a LEGO Dracule Mihawk!
Behind the Scenes & Release Date
Alongside the teaser, Netflix also unveiled a slick new poster featuring a brick-built version of the iconic Straw Hat Jolly Roger skull.
For those wondering how closely this ties into the main series, One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda is officially on board as an Executive Producer, alongside Tomorrow Studios’ Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements, and LEGO’s Jill Wilfert and Keith Malone. The special is directed by Chelsea Ker and written by Tom Hyndman.
Atomic Cartoons is the studio behind the series, having worked on many LEGO projects in the past, including the Star Wars and Marvel iterations, plus worked with Netflix on CoComelon Lane, Red Fish Blue Fish, Oddballs, and Dogs in Space.
Speaking to Netflix, Hyndman said, “We wanted to make something that would ease new viewers into the massive world of ONE PIECE while also giving longtime fans a new, fun perspective to see the iconic stories of the first two seasons.”
The LEGO ONE PIECE animated special will officially drop exclusively on Netflix on September 29th.
