The Kerri Strug biopic Perfect is no longer moving forward at Netflix. Millie Bobby Brown, who was set to star as the Olympic gold medalist, has exited the project, resulting in the film being completely scrapped. Here is a look back at what we knew about the now-canceled Netflix film.

Perfect was an upcoming Netflix Original biographical sports drama film originally slated to be directed by Gia Coppola. The film was written by Ronnie Sandahl and Millie Bobby Brown, adapting the screenplay from “Landing on My Feet: A Diary of Dreams,” the memoir of Olympic gold medalist Kerri Strug. Brown was also attached to produce the film under her PMCA Banner.

Nik Power was set to produce through Riverstone Pictures alongside Thomas Benski via Magna Films. Other listed producers included Jeremy Baxter, Marisa Clifford, Deepak Nayar, Ronnie Sandahl, and Olivia Wilde.

However, Deadline reported that the sports drama is officially dead. According to their sources, Millie Bobby Brown exited the project over “creative differences with producers.” Deadline also noted that director Gia Coppola had recently exited the project as well. Netflix and Brown’s reps declined to comment on her departure.

What was the plot of Perfect?

Here is the synopsis of what Perfect would have covered:

“A Kerri Strug biopic, that tells the true story of the gymnast’s triumph against the odds to win Team USA’s first gold medal at the 1996 Olympics. Strug was hailed as an American hero when she completed her final vault at the Atlanta games on a badly injured ankle to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.”

Who is Kerri Strug?

Kerri Strug is a retired gymnast from Tucson, Arizona, and a former Olympic Medalist for the United States of America, representing her country during the 1992 Barcelona and 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games.

As a member of “the Magnificent Seven,” she became the first U.S. Olympian to win a team gold medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, achieving the victory on the vault despite competing with a badly injured ankle. The image of her landing the vault and subsequently being carried off the mat by her coach Bela Karolyi remains one of the most iconic moments in Olympic history.

Who was in the cast of Perfect?

Millie Bobby Brown was the only confirmed cast member set to portray Kerri Strug before her exit over creative differences.

Despite Perfect falling apart, Netflix is still very much in the Millie Bobby Brown business. The actress recently came off the record-breaking final season of Stranger Things (which aired its series finale in December), and has starred in massive hits for the streamer like Damsel and The Electric State. Looking ahead, her upcoming projects for the streaming service include Enola Holmes 3 (set to bow this year), Just Picture It, A Time Lost, and an adaptation of her debut novel, Nineteen Steps.

Interestingly, back in 2021, it was reported that Thomasin McKenzie was originally set to play Kerri Strug, but the project was subsequently put on hold before Brown took over the package.

What is the production status of Perfect?

Prior to its cancellation, it had been reported in issue 1495 of Production Weekly that filming for Perfect was scheduled to begin on June 8, 2026, and wrap on July 29, 2026. With both the lead star and director departing the project, production has been completely scrapped.

Will Perfect ever be released on Netflix?

No. With the package falling apart behind the scenes, Perfect will not be moving forward at Netflix. Unless the project is completely overhauled with a new creative team and shopped to another studio, this iteration of the Kerri Strug biopic is permanently shelved.
