Kaiju fans, rejoice! While physical media collectors might not have gotten the 4K box set they were campaigning for this year, Netflix is stepping in to save the day. The entire 90s Rebirth of Mothra trilogy is officially making its way to Netflix globally this July as the franchise celebrates the inaugural “Mothra Year“.
Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming Netflix drop, why these films are a must-watch, the ongoing “Mothra Year” celebrations, and what Toho is doing for physical collectors.
The ‘Rebirth of Mothra’ Trilogy Arrives on Netflix
If you’ve been trying to track down the Rebirth of Mothra trilogy (Rebirth of Mothra, Rebirth of Mothra II, and Rebirth of Mothra III), you already know the struggle. The old Sony Blu-ray set has been completely out of print for years, leaving fans heavily campaigning for a modernized 4K box set.
While Toho didn’t bless us with a full remastered physical collection of the 90s films in early 2026, Netflix has successfully snagged the streaming rights. This gives fans a much-needed, highly accessible way to marathon the Heisei-era spin-off films starting next month.
If you’re wondering why these films are such a big deal, they represent a fascinating, fantasy-driven departure from standard Kaiju fare. As Paul Lê recently noted in an excellent retrospective for Bloody Disgusting, the trilogy is often an “overlooked part of the ’90s ‘Godzilla’ era”. Capitalizing on the character’s massive popularity following 1992’s Godzilla vs. Mothra, Toho allowed the Rebirth films to heavily embrace magical and ecological themes, existing completely separate from Godzilla’s timeline.
Packed with incredible practical effects, miniatures, and wild villains like Desghidorah and a Cretaceous King Ghidorah, the trilogy is a “feast of absurd pleasures” for genre fans.
The movies are actually surprisingly easy to find across VOD and streaming, but this will mark the first time they’ve been added to Netflix. Netflix has been connected to the Godzilla franchise in a number of interesting ways over the years, exclusively distributing the recent animated movies and also carrying the SVOD rights to Godzilla Minus One (including a special black-and-white edition).
What exactly is coming to Netflix? Let’s break down the confirmed releases so far, with each expected to touch down on July 1st. We could only confirm a US release for the moment:

2026 is officially Toho’s “Mothra Year.”
Netflix’s timing couldn’t be better. If you’ve been following the news out of Japan, you’ll know that Toho officially declared 2026 as “Mothra Year”.
This is a massive double anniversary for the Queen of the Monsters: it marks exactly 65 years since her cinematic debut in the original 1961 Mothra, and 30 years since the launch of the Rebirth of Mothra trilogy in 1996.
So far, the official “Mothra Year” celebration has heavily focused on activities outside of streaming, including a new merchandise line on the Godzilla Store, packed with exclusive apparel, plushies, and rare collectibles. That’s in addition to a dedicated “Mothra Special Exhibition” running through September 2026 at the Godzilla Museum inside the Nijigen no Mori theme park in Japan. This exhibit features incredible, rare screen-used props from the 90s trilogy, including larval forms and Mothra Leo materials.
