Netflix has officially confirmed that The Boy in the Iron Box will be making its way onto our screens via a new feature film and has added three cast members ahead of filming commencing next month in Canada.

We’ve been keeping track of this movie for quite a while. Back in May 2025, we first learned that Netflix had optioned the story. At the time, we had no idea whether it would be adapted into a limited series or a film. Of course, news has been trickling out since then, and throughout August and September, we learned that it would be a movie.

The most recent update we got was in early September, with the news that David Prior had boarded the project as director with Guillermo del Toro producing alongside Miles Dale.

Netflix has now officially confirmed the project alongside an official logline:

“Flying dark, a plane carrying a team of mercenaries crash-lands on a remote snowy summit. When they come across a maze like stone fortress, it’s no refuge from the wolves and the freezing wind. It’s more like a trap. What they discover can stop the heart—or worse. As terror takes a new shape, the real battle for survival begins.”

The story will bring to life the Amazon Original Stories book series from Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan, first released in July 2024. Six books were released in total.

Rupert Friend leads the cast expected to play the role of Liev, the leader of the Russian Special Forces crew. Friend recently appeared in Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City and Netflix’s The Pale Blue Eye, where he played Artemus Marquis alongside Christian Bale. He also featured in Anderson’s Netflix short The Swan (2023), part of The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar anthology.

Kevin Durand’s most recent high-profile role was in Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, where he plays the villain Proximus Caesar, and over the summer, he featured in The Naked Gun reboot. For Netflix, he appeared in the series Locke & Key as Gideon, a central antagonist in the later seasons.

Finally, Jaeden Martell starred in the Netflix film Mr. Harrigan’s Phone in 2022, adapted from a Stephen King story. More recently, he appeared in Tunnels (2023) and is part of the ensemble for Y2K (2024). He continues to be recognized for It and Defending Jacob.

Filming on the new movie kicks off on October 20th and runs through mid-January 2026, with filming taking place in Canada in Toronto and Oakville.
