Following a stellar showing at the Cannes Film Festival back in May, Netflix has picked up exclusive distribution rights to the drama Gentle Monster, headlined by Léa Seydoux and Laurence Rupp.
Netflix picked up four films that showed at the Cannes Film Festival 2026: La Bola Negra (The Black Ball), Sacrifice, In Waves, and Gentle Monster. The latter is directed by Marie Kreutzer (Corsage, The Ground Beneath My Feet) and stars BAFTA-nominated actress Léa Seydoux (Blue is the Warmest Colour), also known throughout Hollywood for her role as Dr. Madeleine Swann in the James Bond franchise, as well as appearances in big franchises Dune and Mission Impossible. Also co-starring is Austrian actor Laurence Rupp, who notably starred in Netflix’s historical drama Barbarians.
A dark and disturbing drama, Gentle Monster received a standing ovation when it premiered at the Cannes Film Festival — it immediately sparked early awards buzz and is cited as a top contender for the best international feature Oscar. Netflix views this picture as a prime Best Actress vehicle for Léa Seydoux.
The movie isn’t the only picture to show at Cannes that Seydoux has been involved in; she also starred in Arthur Harari’s science-fiction film The Unknown.
What is Gentle Monster about?
Gentle Monster is an emotional and disquieting drama that explores hard-hitting and sensitive topics.
The movie follows experimental musician Lucy (Seydoux), a mother and wife, who is happily married; however, her and her child’s lives are upended when her husband, Philip (Rupp), is suddenly arrested for possession and distribution of child pornography. It is unclear whether her husband was involved in the production of the content, or whether their own child was exploited in the making of it — but she knows their her life has been permanently changed. It chronicles her emotional journey as she contends with the unthinkable situation; her shock, denial, and ultimate search for the truth. The film also has a sub-plot following special investigator, Elsa (played by Jella Haase), who chases the case.
The story takes inspiration from a true article in the German newspaper Die Zeit. “It was about a big ring of pedo-criminals in Germany who were uncovered and then subsequently prosecuted,” director Marie Kreutzer told Deadline. “It was about the whole investigation, it was very explicit, it was very hard to read. And after that, I was at a public [swimming] pool with my daughter, and I walked around the area, and I couldn’t look at the families the same way I had looked at them before. And it just really changed my perspective because obviously I knew about sexual violence against or towards children. But what I wasn’t aware of is that, statistically speaking, I must not only know victims, which I know I do, I must also know perpetrators. And this made me feel very angry and sick, but also helpless. And I thought the only thing I can do about it is make a film about it because that’s what I do.”
Gentle Monster also marks a career first for star Léa Seydoux, who sings on-screen for the first time.
