After decades, the iconic slasher franchise I Know What You Did Last Summer returned to the big screen with a new installment this Summer. Released in July 2025, the film was a legacy sequel, building on the lore of the original 1997 movie and bringing back some familiar faces for a new generation. Now, after its exclusive theatrical window, it’s heading to Netflix, but only in the United States for now.

In this new iteration, serving as a reboot of sorts, it follows a new group of friends who, after a tragic accident, find themselves hunted by a mysterious, hook-wielding killer. The film also connected directly to the original movies by bringing back Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. as their characters, Julie James and Ray Bronson. The new cast included Outer Banks star Madelyn Cline alongside Chase Sui Wonders, Jonah Hauer-King, Tyriq Withers, and Sarah Pidgeon.

The movie, directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, was a throwback to the late ’90s slasher craze. It leaned into the franchise’s established formula of suspense, mystery, and gory kills, but with a modern twist.

With a reported budget of around $17 million, the film grossed over $64 million worldwide. Not great, but not bad either. Reviews were also mixed. On Rotten Tomatoes, critics gave the film a score of 38%, with the consensus that it relied too heavily on nostalgia without creating a compelling story of its own. Audience scores on Rotten Tomatoes and elsewhere were significantly more positive at 69%, indicating that fans found it to be a fun, campy, and enjoyable slasher. The sentiment among viewers praised the film’s shocking twists, the chemistry of the new cast, and its overall faithfulness to the spirit of the original.

I Know What You Did Last Summer Arrives on Netflix US A Month Earlier Than Expected

Thanks to a first-window deal struck all the way back in 2021, all theatrical titles from Sony Pictures (the studio behind the film) and its subsidiaries are coming to Netflix, and I Know What You Did Last Summer is among the 2025 titles that are set to drop.

Typically, with Sony Pictures titles, we have to wait around 120 days for their movies to become available on Netflix. That’d place the movie arriving on Netflix on November 16th, 2025. Thankfully, though, Netflix has managed to get the rights an entire month earlier than expected, just in time for Halloween.

As it currently stands, Netflix in the United States will begin streaming the film on October 16th, 2025. Once there, it’ll stream for 18 months through 2027 before leaving for Hulu/Disney+.

We should also note that the original movie was also just added to Netflix US on October 1st, so if you’re looking to do a double viewing, now is your chance.

Will other regions of Netflix pick up I Know What You Did Last Summer?

If you’re not living in the United States or are unable to access the US library, most will have to wait for anywhere between a year and several years to catch it, where you live, on Netflix, with most first window deals residing elsewhere as of the time of publishing.

Netflix India is the only other major country that carries Sony Pictures movies for the first window, so expect the movie sometime in October or November 2025 alongside the US.

Some European regions, such as Germany and the Netherlands, as well as South Africa and South Korea, are now acquiring Sony movies a few months after the US release, so expect a very late 2025 or early 2026 release date in these regions. Netflix Australia gets its titles around a year or two after release, so expect them sometime in mid-2026. Netflix in the United Kingdom carries the second window after NowTV/Sky gets the first window rights, so expect the movie to land when it leaves there.

Everyone else will have to wait between 2027 and beyond to stream I Know What You Did Last Summer on Netflix; by that point, it’s probably worth considering an alternative provider if you’re desperate.
