Ahead of the release of Genndy Tartakovsky’s upcoming adult-animated comedy Fixed, What’s on Netflix had the opportunity to discuss the film with director and creator Genndy and cast members Adam Devine, Beck Bennett, and River Gallo.
Fixed is a Netflix Original adult-animated comedy film created and directed by Genndy Tartakovsky, who also created beloved childhood cartoons of the 90s & 2000s such as Dexter’s Laboratory and Samurai Jack. He also directed three of the four Hotel Transylvania films, and served as a writer, executive producer, and voice actor in the fourth installment.
The story of Fixed is centered on Bull (played by Adam Devine), a beloved family dog with an obsession for humping his Nana’s leg. But when his family grows tired of his humping antics, they decide it’s time for Bull to be neutered. However, when Bull realises he’s about to lose his balls, he and his pack go on a grand adventure into the big city. In our brief interview with Genndy, he confirmed that the idea for Fixed all started from his own friend group. Crediting their ability to make him laugh, and how could that translate into a film:
“It all started from my kind of my friend group, like they make me laugh like no one else can and I thought well how can I translate this into a movie and exaggerate the personalities, exaggerate the dynamics so that everybody will find it’s funny and that was the kind of the jumping off idea of it and then the whole neutering thing came together and then you know I think because it started from real personalities and we were doing humor that’s not pop culture humor it’s just character humor it started to come together really well and I was very comfortable with that and then to balance the raunchiness and the heart it’s tough right because you’re you’re so far out there sometimes and it’s audacious and then you have this romantic story as well and we always try to do it as sincerely as possible kind of like I hate fake emotion or because we’re not telling the audience what to feel I think that made the difference where it was just really something happening between the characters that you could find accessible.”

With the film being released worldwide on Netflix on August 13, 2025, Fixed only had one opportunity to be shown in front of a large theater audience at its premiere at the 2025 Annecy International Animation Film Festival. Genndy was enthusiastic with his answer when we asked what it was like to see his film being enjoyed inside a theater:
“I mean that screening is one of the best screenings I’ve ever experienced to have like a thousand—almost a thousand animation fans and a lot of them were fans from the work that I’ve done in the past so it was the perfect audience to watch it and they you know it was just an explosion and very rarely do I have an experience where I feel like sitting in the audience I felt like I had them in my hands and I was like okay you’re gonna giggle there you’re gonna laugh big there you’re gonna clap there and it was literally happening as I was watching it, so as a you know as a director that’s a great accomplishment that I did the timing well enough that for an audience to truly appreciate it that way.”

“No, well they came in kind of later to pick up the movie after it was done you know but the best thing is that they really supported it you know and at a certain point when they bought it I’m like “oh I wonder if they’re gonna ask me to change things,” because obviously they can but they supported it they understood it and that’s the hardest thing about it is, if you get it you get it right, you get what it is and they [Netflix] did and so they—you know they bought it and now they’re supporting this release and so it’s been amazing.”
Lastly, we asked the director to describe Fixed to us in three words without using the words funny or raunchy, and he answered with:
“Audaciously heartfelt and humorous.”
We also had the opportunity to talk with cast members Beck Bennett, Adam Devine, and River Gallo, who play the characters of Sterling, Bull, and Frankie in Fixed.
Fixed boasts a wonderfully diverse cast of colourful characters. We asked the cast to share the defining trait of their character that they leaned into with their performance, and we received some great answers.
First was Beck Bennet, who plays Sterling, a love rival of Bull, and a champion dog-winner:
“I think that one of the words that comes up with Sterling, one of the words that comes up with Sterling, there we go, is pampered. Like just really pampered, comfortable, like never really lifts a finger, really just leaning into pamper.”

Second was Adam Devine, who plays the lead role of Bull:
“I feel one of the words that comes up for Bull would be—yeah, he’s pretty insecure and lacks confidence and self-assuredness. And so I feel like that’s sort of what I was leaning into until he starts learning those traits along his journey. So that was initially sort of what I was trying to do.”
Lastly, came River Gallo, who plays Dobermann Frankie:
“I think maybe like confident or like commanding, because Frankie knows what they want, they know who they are, and they know how much to charge for sex for dogs.”

When discussing how to navigate the outrageous humour of Fixed and keep their characters grounded emotionally, here’s what they had to say, starting with Adam:
“Yeah, I feel like this is just how life is, right? I mean, you could just be a horny dog in one moment, and then a sweet little pup just lapping up the world in the very next. So I don’t think it was— or me, this is sort of being a little raunch dog is sort of in my wheelhouse.”

Beck made it clear the best approach for a character such as Sterling was no ensure he was looking down on everyone:
“Yeah, I just really just thought I was better than everybody and wanted to look down on everybody as much as possible”
Lastly, River complimented Genndy’s script, giving credit to the job he did balancing everything:
“I just, you know, I think the script, Genndy did just an incredible job of balancing all of that, like on the page. And I’m also like—it’s just kind of life. Like, you know, sentimental shit happens at the same time that you just want to get laid. “
Our final question was for River, an intersex actor, on what it was like bringing a character like Frankie, an intersex Doberman, to life:
“I mean, I was like, yes, I will voice that. I mean, for like representation sake, it’s amazing. I think Genndy seamlessly incorporated a dog’s identity into a conversation in a movie about what our bodies mean to us and what happens when we lose or gain something. And in the end, you know, Frankie’s message is one about like love and acceptance. And I think that’s what the message of the movie is, too.”
