Luciane Buchanan, the lead actress of Netflix’s smash hit crime action series The Night Agent, has confirmed she will not be returning to reprise her role as Rose Larkin in The Night Agent season 3. Here’s what we know.

New Zealand-born actress Luciane Buchanan got her big break on The Night Agent, where she plays the role of Rose Larkin, a former tech CEO who was forced to go into hiding after the death of her Night Agent uncle and aunt. Quickly becoming the most important person in Peter Sutherland’s life, Rose was not only under his protection, but their relationship evolved into something much deeper. Notably, for both seasons of The Night Agent so far, Rose has been the show’s moral compass, often grounding Peter when he’s close to taking an action he would later regret.

However, the third season of The Night Agent will be without its moral compass for the time, as Luciena Buchanan has confirmed in an interview with Deadline that she will not be returning for the third season.

Here’s what she had to say about not starring in the third season:

“As much as that show has been so amazing, especially for my career — being a lead on a U.S. show from little New Zealand was such a whirlwind — the writers decided that they wanted to follow Peter and his journey based on what happened at the end of Season 2. And so, we don’t get to see what happens to Rose, but I think it’s a really exciting time for the show, and who knows, it’s not a goodbye forever.”

The decision to leave Rose out of the third season was made by showrunner Shawn Ryan and producer Marney Hochman (MiddKid Productions), who both broke the news to Buchanan.

“They called me not so long after Season 2, and they were like, we’ve been trying to find a way to bring her in, but we want to do her character justice and not make her a sub-character. I totally respected that decision and agreed. I was like, if it makes sense to a story, I’ll do that. If it doesn’t, let’s not force that.

However, this doesn’t mean this is the end of Rose in The Night Agent, as the door has been firmly left open by Shawn Ryan for her potential return:

“I adore Luciane as a person and as a performer, and I don’t believe that this means we’re done telling the story of Peter and Rose. I hope circumstances ultimately allow for the return of Rose to our Night Agent universe.

At the time of writing, the actress is still listed on IMDb as appearing in episode 10 of The Night Agent season 3, so unless it’s a cameo appearance at the end of the series, we’ll deem that information to be incorrect until proven otherwise. Buchanan has been busy working on the Apple+ series Chief of War, where she starred as Ka’ahumanu, and is currently filming for Evil Dead Burn.
