Little House on the Prairie, one of the most beloved pieces of American literature, is receiving a brand new adaptation at Netflix. Helmed by The Boys executive producer Rebecca Sonnenshine and coming to Netflix on July 9, 2026, the series has officially dropped its first teaser trailer, alongside new first-look images and a highly anticipated second-season renewal.

Little House on the Prairie is an upcoming Netflix Original period drama that will “reimagine” Laura Ingalls Wilder’s autobiographical children’s novel. The story will also differ from the one told in the beloved Michael Landon series, which aired between 1974 and 1983 on NBC.

With the release of the first official trailer and teaser art, Netflix shared the following tagline for the new series:

“They left everything they knew for a new life on the prairie. Meet the Ingalls family as they discover what ‘home’ really means.”

What is the plot of Little House on the Prairie?

Netflix has provided a brand new official logline for the series:

“Part hopeful family drama, part epic survival tale, and part origin story of the American West, this fresh adaptation of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s iconic semi-autobiographical Little House books offers a kaleidoscopic view of the struggles and triumphs of those who shaped the frontier.”

While much of the upcoming season remains under wraps, in statements provided by Netflix, showrunner Rebecca Sonnenshine provided a window into where the Ingalls’ story will begin.

“The first season is inspired by Little House on the Prairie, which is actually the third book in the series,” she says. “The characters talk about their life before they came to the prairie — we might meet a few characters from their past.”

The first season follows the Ingalls family’s move from their Wisconsin farm to a log house in Montgomery County, Kansas, in 1869. Their new home was built on Native American territory, but Laura’s father had heard that the government planned to open the territory to white settlers and thus took the risk to settle his family.

The family faces risks and perils during their two-year stay in Kansas, including falling ill, starting a new farm, and land disputes with Native Americans and the U.S. Government.

Episode 1 of the series, we can reveal, will be titled Independence.

Who is behind the new Little House on the Prairie?

The Boys EP Rebecca Sonnenshine (Vampire Diaries, Archive 81) is the series’s showrunner and an executive producer.

In statements provided by Netflix, Sonnenshine detailed the tone of the upcoming adaptation:

“This show is a love story about a family. They’re a family you want to be with, you want to know, you want to spend time with. That’s really at the core of what Little House on the Prairie is about: a family that is there for each other, that tells stories to each other, tells stories about themselves.”

Like so many generations of readers and viewers before her, Sonnenshine found herself swept up in the Ingalls family’s world at a young age.

“I fell deeply in love with these books when I was 5 years old. They inspired me to become a writer and a filmmaker, and I am honored and thrilled to be adapting these stories for a new audience.”
