What is the plot of Long Story Short?
Described as a “family comedy through time,” the show follows one family, the Schwoopers, across multiple generations, told not chronologically, but through a kaleidoscopic, time-jumping format. “The first episode… takes place at a certain year, and we get to meet these kids as kids,” Bob-Waksberg explained at the Annecy International Animation Festival. “And then in the next episode, we jump to the future and they’re adults with kids of their own.” This structure lets the show explore how moments from childhood echo into adulthood, often not through big dramatic events, but through what he calls the “little t traumas of our lives.”

Is the show going to appeal to those who loved Bojack Horseman? That’s the hope but the shows are very much different. “We wanted to be deliberate that it felt different… that it could not be mistaken for a BoJack spinoff,” Bob-Waksberg said. Still, the creative DNA remains: “It’s unmistakably me. It’s unmistakably Lisa.” As for what kind of legacy he hopes the new series builds on? Bob-Waksberg isn’t prescriptive: “Make the things you want to see, not the things you think you should be making.” But he does have one message for skeptics: “If you hated BoJack, this is completely different. So give it a try.”
