Netflix and the BFI Film Festival have invited audiences to step inside an exhibition of Guillermo del Toro’s hauntingly beautiful Frankenstein adaptation.
Guillermo del Toro’s adaptation of Mary Shelley’s seminal novel Frankenstein is perhaps the most anticipated Netflix film of 2025. The visionary director — best known for Pan’s Labyrinth and The Shape of Water — brings his signature gothic and hauntingly beautiful style to the iconic story. The movie follows the brilliant but egotistical scientist Victor Frankenstein, who brings a grotesque creature into existence through a monstrous experiment. The creature, made up of dead body parts, is rejected and abandoned by Frankenstein, and ultimately left to roam alone.
Academy-award winning Guillermo del Toro’s version of Frankenstein is strikingly profound and human compared to the myriad other adaptations. It leans less into horror and more into human nature. This film has been a long time coming for him. “This film concludes a journey for me that started at age seven, when I saw James Whale’s Frankenstein films for the first time,” del Toro said. “Gothic horror became my church, and Boris Karloff my Messiah.”
The film boasts an all-star cast as well, including Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein and Jacob Elodie as the monster. Also cast are Mia Goth, Felix Kammerer, David Bradley, Lars Mikkelsen, Christian Convery, with Charles Dance, and Christoph Waltz.
