As Netflix steadily renews its French comedy pipeline, it recently announced a firm April 23rd release date for one of its highly anticipated projects: Flunked (French name: Recalé). What is it about? Who is behind this series? Here are the details known so far.
Flunked is a French comedy created by a Netflix mainstay, just like Igor Gotesman: writer/director François Uzan. He has the privilege of having produced 2 projects back-to-back for the platform : Represent (En Place), with Jean-Pascal Zadi, who is awaiting official word on its renewal for a third season, and the movie adaptation of the hit board game Loups-Garous de Thiercelieux, Family Pack, released last fall. He was also an integral part in co-creating and writing the first few seasons of Lupin alongside George Kay.
Talking about the show last spring on the Séries Mania Lille stage, he revealed he had also gone undercover in high schools himself to research and write the show. “I told teachers this will be about infiltration and be a goofy show, but when we see teachers on screen, I wanted it to be realistic”, Uzan explained (via Deadline). The show is supposed to mix elements of high school drama, thriller, social concerns about the reality of teaching today, and more comedic moments. The show is produced by Itinéraire Productions, which is behind the megahit show HPI, broadcast on TF1.
When is Flunked coming to Netflix?
Netflix has officially confirmed a firm global release date of April 23, 2026, for the show. Ahead of its worldwide streaming debut, the series had its world premiere at the Séries Mania festival in Lille on March 27, 2026, where the first three episodes were screened to audiences.
What is the plot of Flunked?
The 8-episode series (with episodes running around 30 minutes each) follows Eddy, a delinquent math prodigy and conman who cops a plea in order to avoid jail time: he will go undercover as a high school teacher in order to identify the child of a criminal mastermind in the span of 3 weeks, and help police track him down.
Who is the cast of Flunked?
The cast is fronted by rising Swiss stand-up star Alexandre Kominek. François Uzan explained (in Le Parisien) that the comedian, who has had a hit stand-up show in France with Bâtard Sensible (Sensitive Bastard), “radiated a solar energy with a very cunning and malevolent side”, which was in tune with the casting of Eddy, “an Eddie Murphy-type sympathetic hustler with the gift of gab”.
He is joined by Laurence Arné, an established comedian who has starred in hit French comedies Radin and La Ch’tite Famille alongside local superstar Dany Boon. According to La Voix du Nord, she will play a tenacious cop which will guide Eddy through his mission. Rounding out the cast is some familiar French faces such as Leslie Medina, who plays the head of the high school and former flame of Eddy. The rich ensemble cast also includes Sabrina Ouazani (former star of Netflix Original The Hook-Up Plan), Fred Testot, Gustave Kervern, Jean-Claude Muaka, Yannik Landrein, Joséphine de Meaux, Bérangère McNeese, and Mathilde Seigner. The latter’s role is probably a recurring role, as the actress remains in-demand on both French television and movies.
