Minka Kelly and Josh Duhamel’s new soapy romance series set in the heart of Texas is getting into production in just a few months, and we’ve now got new production timelines, which give us an idea of when we can expect the show to return.
The Season 2 renewal came several months after viewers had anxiously waited following the premiere. Although viewership was good, it was by no means a complete knockout success in Netflix terms. It featured in the top 10s for 4 weeks, picking up 23.3M views, and the new engagement report suggests that this was increased to 29M by the end of the first half of 2025. That’s around the levels that The Residence and PULSE received, with neither getting official renewals.
When the series was first announced, Netflix didn’t confirm any production start, although one or two of the trades noted that production would begin sometime in the Fall and possibly in September. Fortunately, that date hasn’t slipped back; the plan is still to start filming in mid-to-late September.
The plans, we hear, are for a four-month shoot that will tentatively start on September 17, 2024, and wrap on January 14, 2025.
What does this mean for a potential release date? Well don’t expect the show to be coming back on an annual basis given that April will only be three months after the show wraps. Instead, given this timeline, a more realistic expectation is for the second season to be released sometime in the second half of the year.
The show will return to its home in New Mexico, primarily shooting in Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Mora County, San Miguel, and Las Vegas (yes, there’s a Las Vegas in New Mexico, not just Nevada!). For Season 1, in addition to Netflix’s impressive sound stages at Netflix Studios, the locations included are the Southwest Event Center, Los Poblanos, the Historic Las Vegas Plaza, the Blame Her Ranch, and the Buena Vista Ranch. You can see more filming locations on the Netflix In Your Neighborhood website.
Speaking about filming in New Mexico, Josh Duhamel has previously said, “It was the perfect spot to go shoot,” adding that filming was a good mix of using Netflix’s soundstages vs more outdoor settings. “Netflix built an amazing studio and soundstage. It’s like their own little city there. But as far as the work, we get to spend so much time out with the horses on these beautiful landscapes.”
Minka Kelly was similarly praising of the location, “The most beautiful skies, the most delicious food. I grew up in Albuquerque, and I hadn’t been back. I was so amazed at what a huge, proper studio this was.”
